Abominable
Today’s strip marks one year since I started The Abominable Charles Christopher and I had no idea at the time where it would end up or how much it would affect me. I love these characters and I’m happiest when I’m drawing them. Thanks so much to all of you who have stuck with me. Your feedback and support have been invaluable and I hope you’ll stick around for another year. We’re just getting started…

It’s been a good year Karl. I re-read the whole series again today. I don’t know where we’re going, but I am really enjoying the ride. Your artwork is beautiful and the characters touching, making this a great strip.

I love you too, Karl! (in a completely Platonic way
This strip is just wonderful, as nearly all of them are. I’m glad to see characters from way back making return appearances.
June 18th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Haha…a little bit of meta-commentary on this one?
Congrats on the one year…feels good, doesn’t it?
June 18th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Congratulations Karl!
I love these characters every week too! I’ll stick around another year if you will. Thanks for all the great work.

June 18th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Congratulations. I discovered this comic 3 weeks ago (in 4chan’s /co of al places) and had a feast reading most of the chapters in one go. My favorite still is the bird with family-middle age trauma.
June 18th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Congrats on the year mark! Love the strip thus far.
June 18th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Wow, a whole year and you’re still going strong & we’re still looking forward to each Wednesday knowing we won’t be disappointed. Way to go, Karl!

Man, papa owl in panel four…. I can relate.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
One Year! Excellent!
These guys rank up there as some of the most memorable characters in comics…Every week, no matter which road you go down or which characters you focus on, it is gold.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Congratulations!
I love this one especially.
This is really something that makes me happy. It never disappoints. It just brightens my day (God, I love the anonymity of the internet. Lets me be sappy without damaging my reputation). Glad to know you’re not going anywhere.

Also, that baby owl is dangerously adorable.

Amazing story, I started reading this a few months ago, this is like the first “professional”-looking webcomic I’ve seen – and the story is f***ing awesome.

I’ve only been reading the strip for a month but I’m glad I found the link on the newsarama blog. I didn’t know what to expect at first, and I still don’t, but I find myself anticipating this more and more every week.

Congratulations, Karl, on a great year. I hope your characters and situations continue to inspire you and all of your readers. I know they inspire me.
(I still think I like “Bravado” better, but what the heck.
June 19th, 2008 at 11:29 am
I’m not usually to vocal here, but one year! thats fantastic.
Karl it is very apparent to me that you love doing this webcomic. Your passion for it, but more importantly your personality and sense of humor are all over it. Keep up the great work (I know you will) and thanks for distracting me from “work” for at least 5 min a week.

June 19th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Happy anniversary. I’m a monster fan. But I still have to ask: when are you going to publish this? I’d love a HC, because, personally, this quality of work deserves no less that a stellar presentation.
Looking forward to all we’ll discover about Charles and his world over the coming year(s).
June 20th, 2008 at 12:39 am
Happy anniversary, Karl. Still my favourite online strip by far…
June 20th, 2008 at 6:49 am
I freaking love the big owl, little owl dynamics. Probably my favourite characters to date, although i have a sneaking suspicion that we wont be seeing them for a while…..this makes me sad. On the other hand, congratz is in order on your first anniversary. I can only hope that you can find it in your heart (and your schedule) to keep making wednesdays just that little bit more bearable for us all for some time to come
June 20th, 2008 at 8:37 am
Grats to the first year anniversary!
June 20th, 2008 at 10:53 am

Thanks for a years worth of a truly wonderful comic! This is by far my favorite comic (web and otherwise).
June 20th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
congrats on one year! i’m always excited for updates. beautiful strip.
June 21st, 2008 at 7:01 am
More congratulations! Love the owls – for me The Idiot strip summed up the beauty of what you’re doing. I suppose in story terms they represent the boundary of the forest, or something, but it also reminded me of how long has passed in Charles’ world since you started (my guess is it’s about a week at most).
June 21st, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Abominable is incredibly intriguing and the inflection of personality that you get in your characters is wonderful.
June 22nd, 2008 at 1:22 am
Hi Karl!
I’m Brazilian comic lover and I decided to check on your work, since you are an Eisner nominee now, and that’s a big deal.
I just read the whole thing and all I can say is… WOW. This is way better than Lion’s King and Nemo, and reminds me a little of the genius of Brian K. Vaughan’s Pride of Baghdad graphic novel. The artwork is astonishing, the characters are great, and the text is amazing, really clever, funny and sometimes really poignant.
Congrats on the anniversary, and I hope, for good art’s sake, that you keep doing your thing for many months to come.
Cheers =)

July 3rd, 2008 at 9:14 am
I have been reading from the beginning and wanted to say that your grasp of the quirks human nature and your amazing art makes this one of the best webcomics out there (it is by far the best drawn). Everyone I’ve showed it to loves it for different reasons. Congratulations and thank you for the year.
