Tragically beautiful – the panel where he is reaching out in vain is breath-taking. Can’t wait to see what Charles Christopher will do when he catches the one responsible. I love it when he’s feisty.
Troubling indeed – but I feel that worse parts are yet to happen – and i hope that I am proved wrong .
“dokeck wrote ” I want to see the first human character in the story. ” If you go back near the beginning – you have the circus trainer of the bear . He was a nasty to sat the least.
I’m stunned. Yes, I knew the fringes of evil and darkness were invading CC’s corner of the world. Yes, I realized all along we weren’t reading about the 100 acres’ wood. But still. To kill off the epitome of bubbling naivete by killing the cub. That shows a darkness akin to some of Stephen King’s random evil. Wow.
I’ll keep reading because your art is wonderful and I want to see where this is going. But on a certain level I’ll be clicking in with some apprehension rather than anticipation. (Although I’m hopeful Townsen will be revived somehow.)
Oh ho! Methinks Charles is going to lay down some pain pretty soon. Townsen, though… I guess I’m still expecting a twist, and so optimism remains indefatigable.
“Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.”
Dude, if Chuck C doesn’t wrap that barrel around that guy’s neck, I swear, Karl, it’s gonna be the end of ACC for me. (Also, Townsen getting up from his nap and playing happily around said scene will be most welcome. Thanks.)
Awww… A coat to go with the hunter’s hat, that’s what Charles is about to become! If he’s quick, and observant, though, he can make a coat of his own! I’ve heard human leather is quite soft and comfy. Theoretically…
I love the panel where he’s reaching out. Christopher trying to contemplate the situation, possibly asking himself if it’s real. That often happens to me when I experience a great loss.
You know, I can’t stop myself from coming and checking this site every few days, hoping that you’ve updated. You really do heart-wrenchingly beautiful work.
…*Sob* Charles better lay down some pain. He -better-. *Wails*
OK, I want to get whatever lured Townsen away… Something is working behind the scenes here… but hey… If Charles wants to tear the hunter a new one… it’s ok with me…
I hate you. I mean, I love your work, but I really, really hate you. You know how to exploit a character’s strength, which is really terrible because Townsen’s strength is that he is our weakness.
I got tired of the “evil, human hunters” theme a while ago. I don’t cry watching Bambi anymore. Maybe that is not where you are going with this (the ambiguity of the the Lion on the mountain) but I am not waiting around to see anymore.
Wow, Karl, ive been very close to commenting on many strips before this one, it is abnormal for me to comment on anything online by the way, but after this one i just couldnt help myself. they way you create and capture emotion in your fauna, scenes, and of course, Charles, is pure genius. Just wanted to say, keep it up and i cant wait to see where this whole thing is going.
Wow, justsalt. Sounds like a silly reason to stop reading a webcomic. I mean, the “evil human hunters” theme is not even used that much… since Bambi? How old is that movie anyway? Do you still watch it? Did this movie traumatize you or something?!!
Townsen lies dead. CC is next. The lion dies too and and “darkness” wins. End of this strip in 2 or 3 weeks. Lion, CC and Townsen mounted in hunter’s trophy room. Artificial tear placed at corner of CCs eye.
This is just beautiful..
Too look at Charles Christopher and see he doesn’t know what he’s facing, what to do.. Well done man.
And the people threatening, cussing and demanding of you are starting to make me wonder if they’re just excitable online, or completely incapable of dealing with emotions such as these.
Thank you for keeping the medium of comics fresh and vibrant, in many ways. It’s always a pleasure to come to this site and see what has happened, for good or ill. As long as you keep putting them out I’ll keep reading them.
“I’ll keep reading because your art is wonderful and I want to see where this is going. But on a certain level I’ll be clicking in with some apprehension rather than anticipation. (Although I’m hopeful Townsen will be revived somehow.)”
I find this incredibly silly. This new twist has demonstrated something about the comic that few comics achieve: that we *care* about the characters. This isn’t Marvel, where characters die once, maybe twice an issue and are revived at least that often. Characters are not immortal, especially not the naive ones. I personally will be very disappointed if Townsen is revived.
Rob Cain- This is actually exactly how I think. I’ll be sad if either dies, but I’ll still unhappy if either is revived. Anyway, I think that it would actually be kinda funny if it ended with BOOM!!! I’m sure others think differently, and I’m also sure that it won’t end that way. Unless Karl is making me think that with his EEEEEVIL mind powers. So yeah I’m not gonna cry or anything cuz Charles attempted hitting that Lion, so this hunter will get the same. Great work Karl!
Unless, of course, Townsen heard the shot and instantly dropped, “playing dead” as his dear mother may have taught him, until he figures out where exactly the danger is and can then run off in the right direction safely. Or maybe the little scamp really is dead.. an the leg/foot movement could be attributed to muscle spasms. Or he could be stunned, the bullet grazing him. We’ll have to wait and see. Personally, I was hoping he’d be a recurring character and somewhere down the line we could have a Townsen plushie.. maybe even with a voicebox that chattered like he did (because a quiet Townsen isn’t a Townsen at all!)
My friend just got a Pomeranian and it resembles Townsen (except being black) so now every time I look at her, she just reminds me of what’s happening to that poor arctic fox.
Doing the Bambi plot twist that Disney will probably never do anymore. I clap my hands to you.
I sat down last night and read the entire archive. It was my first exposure to ACC. (can’t remember what comic linked me here, DoOmCat studios, i think) The utter anguish that Charles is experiencing in panel 4 is breathtaking. I cried when I got to this strip.
Thank you for amazing artwork and an incredibly moving storyline. Keep up the good work.
hopefully you have A REASON why that little white arctic fox would be killed…..because I’m not sure why I should read the rest of your comic – that of an uninteresting, confused abominable “snowman” who’s scared of his own shadow….prove me wrong….and maybe I’ll see your point….because I really want to….
Discovered this comic today, and all i can say is this: This is the most beautiful comic i’ve ever seen, had many nostalgic emotions while reading this. The style of it seems so unique and so familiar at the same time. Really brilliant, had visions of a movie about it when i read it :P I hope a respectable movie company makes a animated motion picture out of this some day :)
Please down’t let Townsen be dead. =[ I just started reading today, and I get so attached to characters, I really do, especially if a story is really good, and I cried a little when I had to contemplate Townsen being dead. He’s so cute, and innocent. If he dies… well, what hope is there for the rest? That the purest little guy in the whole dang forest got shot? And besides, artic foxes are my favorite animals in the whooole world. Please let him be okay somehow.
I just started reading this today, as I’m sure many people did due to Hawk’s link. You can’t fathom the…craziness going on in my brain right now because of this strip…urgh…keep it up…and let him come back somehow…please?
I just read the whole comic so far. It is named abominable, but Charles is super cute in my eyes.
It’s wonderful how by being so simple, this comic is ridiculously hilarious and yet so deeply touching and sad. Thank you for your work so far, and please draw more!
Came across your comic via StumbleUpon, and just got done reading it from start to finish. You’re a very talented storyteller; getting such funny moments, or as portrayed here, emotionally tugging ones. A-kudos to you. Cannot wait to see the next strip. It’s all amazing.
wow i just found this thru pure luck and im hooked. love your art and storytelling and im also a little sad that townsen is …. dead? dunno but ill find out. oh and more headbonking of the rabbit much hilarity in that panel.
This is so beautiful and sad that I’m nearly crying. I just sat and read through the entire archive in record time. Now I can’t wait for the next page in this truly beautiful story.
Just finished reading the archives, and I have to say beautiful job man. This is like a great movie that stays with you after you’ve seen it. It’s one of the few comics where I realize I’m smiling as I read it. Your characters make people feel emotion, that’s talent man. Anyway, thank you for sharing your wonderful work.
Well… as many readers, I just started to read this comic about… an hour ago, redirected from Aplegeeks, and I got hooked to it nearly… 50 minutes ago. I just wanted to congratulate you on your magnificent artwork, moving storytelling, character design, etc. I positively love this comic.
I’m a professional dreamer, though, so I know a couple of things about situations like these. It’s not a nightmare ’till you realize the story ends nowhere. This is a great cliffhanger. Kudos.
You can thank Ananth and Hawk from Applegeeks for the reference.
*clicks*
This is going on my regular reading list. The death of Townsend is the major reason why. Not because I didn’t like him as a character, but because you, Karl, have the cojones to do something that hurts your readers’ hearts in this way. Not many authors or artists would do it, let alone so early in the storyline. Good job evoking these reactions from everyone.
I’ve just discovered this site and read through the entire archive. How can this tale come to a halt at such a powerful instance?!
Karl, this is the greatest comic I have ever discovered. Thank you so much for sharing your passion with us all. It demonstrates such an untainted beauty and heart that peirces most tales drenched with self-awareness.
Thank you for helping me to see another side of storytelling. This comic is a gift. It is art. :)
““Townsens back leg has moved since last weeks strip.
If he’s still moving theres a chance he’s OK?”
Legs can twitch after you’re dead, usually after you’re shot.”"
Yeah was clutching at straws. I can see how killing off Townsen adds a completely new (and dark) turn to the story; he was just such a likeable character, and I’m hoping he hasn’t disappeared from the series. Maybe he’ll come back as one of the “glowy” ones, like Moonbear or his brothers.
I have only today found your comic, Karl, through a link on the Applegeeks Web site and I have wasted a lot of my working day reading through the archives because I was hooked from the start. I love your artwork and the story.
I could not believe when I got to this strip and there was no “next” link waiting for me to continue with the story. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
And yes, I use this member name on all the sites I register on (where possible) but I will use it in honour of Townsen from now on!
The suspence is killing me, I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen.
*twitch twitch* Hurry and post the next page!!! :D :D
I have to say this is one of the best web comics I’ve read in a while!
That second panel; that’s exactly the face I pulled when I read the BANG a few pages back.
I am totally blaming the Lion/Moon Bear/Wind. Totally.
Loving this. Hating it too, but that’s why I’m loving it. Things like this (and the people that complain about them) always make me think of this quote;
“They do that to you because it’s drama. If you love it, it will hurt you. That’s the deal. If you want to watch the characters have a nice time, then buy a screensaver” Paul Cornell
The Abominable Charles Christopher; not a screensaver. XD
every time i randomly jump to this particular sequence, i well up looking at the 2nd to 4th panel. the emotion you capture in your drawings is remarkable.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
nooooo, townsen!
September 24th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
oh my………..
September 24th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Tragically beautiful – the panel where he is reaching out in vain is breath-taking. Can’t wait to see what Charles Christopher will do when he catches the one responsible. I love it when he’s feisty.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
I bet Christopher wishes he still had his pacifier right now
September 24th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Why would someone want to hurt those two?!
September 24th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Oh my god.
You know, this might be a good week to have TWO strips. Maybe even three. Doncha agree?
September 24th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Why is this coming out on the same day I have to give up my puppy?! Too much!
September 24th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Karl, this made me so sad, I wanted to pop you one in the jaw. I am a grown man, it’s not ok to feel such emotions. =/
I hope Charles’ response is righteous anger. I wanna see some sasquatch rage.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Oh man, two weeks of gut-wrenching suspense in a row. Brilliant and insane, all at once. I feel like my balls are in my throat.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Cue Charles to go apesh*t in 3…2….
September 24th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Oh god, it just keeps getting worse…
September 24th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
He shall feel the fuuuuuuurious anger.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Oh my god.
Oh my god.
…Townsen!!! NO!
September 24th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
:( this almost made me cry
September 24th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Tell me he is aliveee. On other note, I want to see the first human character in the story.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
In the immortal words of the Waco Kid, “Oh no, don’t do that. If you shoot him, you’ll just make him mad. ”
I wonder if the tranquilizer he shot Townsen with will wear off in time . . .
September 24th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Troubling indeed – but I feel that worse parts are yet to happen – and i hope that I am proved wrong .
“dokeck wrote ” I want to see the first human character in the story. ” If you go back near the beginning – you have the circus trainer of the bear . He was a nasty to sat the least.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Fine suspense, sir. I can’t wait for next week’s. Keep up the fine art and storytelling. You’ve got me hooked permanently.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Moving.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
..And this is how those guys in Georgia got the bigfoot corpse.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Wow…
That’s all I can say…
September 24th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Oh ho! Methinks Charles is going to lay down some pain pretty soon. Townsen, though… I guess I’m still expecting a twist, and so optimism remains indefatigable.

Charles better rip that hunter apart.
September 24th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
“BOO! Haahahahaha, I got you, right? I got you!”
Right?
You got us…. right?
September 24th, 2008 at 6:46 pm

But…Townsen can’t die…he’s too cute…and he has an awesome name…and he’s cute…
September 24th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Townsens back leg has moved since last weeks strip.
If he’s still moving theres a chance he’s OK?
September 24th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Oh. My.
This strip is astonishingly powerful. I do love it so.
September 24th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Awww… A coat to go with the hunter’s hat, that’s what Charles is about to become! If he’s quick, and observant, though, he can make a coat of his own! I’ve heard human leather is quite soft and comfy. Theoretically…
September 24th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Yo, if he gets shot, I bet he just goes nuts and tears the shooter UP.
Good work as ALAWAYS my man.
September 24th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
D:>
September 24th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Oh man!
September 24th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
I love the panel where he’s reaching out. Christopher trying to contemplate the situation, possibly asking himself if it’s real. That often happens to me when I experience a great loss.
This is so sad, you’re a great story teller.
September 24th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Anybody ever tell you that comics aren’t supposed to make you cry? :(
It’s fantastic, but…man…
September 24th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
you rock, man. keep on rocking.
September 24th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
THAT’S ENOUGH, KARL KERSCHL.
September 24th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Dude. piff…. This is getting out of hand we need NEEED another strip this week. I cant stand it.
September 24th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
I bet it’s Sarah Palin…
September 24th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Brokenhearted.
September 24th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Why?
September 24th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
BOOM, and that’s the end of Charles Christopher.
That’d actually be kind of a funny ending, but we all know it won’t
end that way.

September 25th, 2008 at 1:25 am
Beautiful technique with the tree silhouettes in the last panel. It works remarkably well.
Have I mentioned that I love this comic?
September 25th, 2008 at 3:11 am
No way! I expected it, but no way. :( Go get him, Charles!
September 25th, 2008 at 3:26 am
oh my god, the poses are so natural! Each strip just blows me away!

let me know if you have the time
September 25th, 2008 at 5:24 am
Please tell me that sasquatches have the power to give life. This simply can’t be the end of Townsen. You made me a sad panda.
September 25th, 2008 at 6:13 am
no butler… yet.
September 25th, 2008 at 7:20 am

Wow, am I the only one who WASN’T expecting Charles to still be there?
Beautiful comic, Karl, as always, I’ll be back in a week for more.
September 25th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Hallo!
Very well done, Karl!
The suspance is palpable.
Since it seems that Charles will be shot too, I suppose the hunter just shoots with narcotics.
Saluti!
Ludwig
September 25th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
One thing. Narcotic dart guns don’t go “BANG!”. They go “pffft-pop”. Remember Wild Kingdom?

September 29th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
This is so sad. On top of the fact, that my folks just put down there dog a few days ago, this make me very sad all over again.
Beautiful art by the way. I love your style.

The Lion/Moon Bear led to the little fox to the hunter….is he trying to make Charles violent and vengeful?
September 29th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
I just started reading this today…and I’m an instant fan. This comic is beautiful. Thank you for doing what you do.
September 29th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Please down’t let Townsen be dead. =[ I just started reading today, and I get so attached to characters, I really do, especially if a story is really good, and I cried a little when I had to contemplate Townsen being dead. He’s so cute, and innocent. If he dies… well, what hope is there for the rest? That the purest little guy in the whole dang forest got shot? And besides, artic foxes are my favorite animals in the whooole world. Please let him be okay somehow.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
I just started reading this today, as I’m sure many people did due to Hawk’s link. You can’t fathom the…craziness going on in my brain right now because of this strip…urgh…keep it up…and let him come back somehow…please?
September 30th, 2008 at 12:59 am
*o*
why did the glowy foxes lead him there?
I just started reading today as well…I AM HOOKED love this man. You are a talent.
September 30th, 2008 at 1:46 am
Dude, not cool. I hope Charles bludgeons that hunter with his own gun!
September 30th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Brilliant. This comic is brilliant in every single goddamn way I can think of and more.
September 30th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Cruel!!!!!!!!!
September 30th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
I just read the whole comic so far. It is named abominable, but Charles is super cute in my eyes.
It’s wonderful how by being so simple, this comic is ridiculously hilarious and yet so deeply touching and sad. Thank you for your work so far, and please draw more!
September 30th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Came across your comic via StumbleUpon, and just got done reading it from start to finish. You’re a very talented storyteller; getting such funny moments, or as portrayed here, emotionally tugging ones. A-kudos to you. Cannot wait to see the next strip. It’s all amazing.
September 30th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

September 30th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
“Townsens back leg has moved since last weeks strip.
If he’s still moving theres a chance he’s OK?”
Legs can twitch after you’re dead, usually after you’re shot.
September 30th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
I just found this today, and I’ve spent like an hour looking through everything,
and then I realise the next one isn’t out yet.

I kid, but seriously, come on. You can’t kill Townsen… please?
Also, I do appreciate your comic, on so many levels.

This is so beautiful and sad that I’m nearly crying. I just sat and read through the entire archive in record time. Now I can’t wait for the next page in this truly beautiful story.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:31 am

Kudos.
Will keep on reading. Greetings from Chile.
On other topic:
TOWNSEN!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO… SmashKillDestroy!!!

I… I just started reading today… I cried a bit. Okay, I cried quite a bit… This is a beautiful comic

Townsend, we hardly knew you.

NO! NO!!

Tranq gun? Could be a reward for the renown tale of yeti’s etc.
Great comic! Came here from Applegeeks. Keep it UP!
October 1st, 2008 at 10:07 am
Reading a lot in to the “leg movement.” I too hope Townsen is well, but alas, it may not be in the stars.
October 1st, 2008 at 10:18 am
I have only today found your comic, Karl, through a link on the Applegeeks Web site and I have wasted a lot of my working day reading through the archives because I was hooked from the start. I love your artwork and the story.
I could not believe when I got to this strip and there was no “next” link waiting for me to continue with the story. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
And yes, I use this member name on all the sites I register on (where possible) but I will use it in honour of Townsen from now on!
October 1st, 2008 at 1:29 pm
The suspence is killing me, I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen.
*twitch twitch* Hurry and post the next page!!! :D :D
I have to say this is one of the best web comics I’ve read in a while!

SHIT!
March 27th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
That second panel; that’s exactly the face I pulled when I read the BANG a few pages back.
I am totally blaming the Lion/Moon Bear/Wind. Totally.
Loving this. Hating it too, but that’s why I’m loving it. Things like this (and the people that complain about them) always make me think of this quote;
“They do that to you because it’s drama. If you love it, it will hurt you. That’s the deal. If you want to watch the characters have a nice time, then buy a screensaver” Paul Cornell
The Abominable Charles Christopher; not a screensaver. XD
May 15th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
NOOOO! Townsen, why Townsen, why?!
He was all young n’ innocent! T_T

Over the past few strips, starting at the rain, I began to tear up.
Last strip, I read it and quickly hurried to this one.
And started to feel tears down my face.
So sad.

July 8th, 2010 at 11:40 pm
D’awww why does you saddens us?
July 26th, 2010 at 1:54 pm
I just want you to know that I just started reading this… and was hooked by the artwork and the subtle humor….
But this… made me cry…..
And now I’ll never stop reading.
Congratulations on being a gifted storyteller as well as a stunning artist.
