@Tom yeah it is two different sets of branches in 3 and five so they may be lurking elsewhere… I wonder what Charles is gonna do with all the feathers?
@Annabelle – I see panel 3 as a close up of the branches in panel 5 (look around the bottom middle in panel 5 – the lowest down sticking branch matches to the one in panel 3 at bottom right). Those birds have flown! And where is Townsen? Did the birds carry him away? or WORSE?
The birds are probably ravens or crows as Dave said, and CC sees them because of Townsen’s recent death and the spirit being taken to its next existence.
I hope Townsen’s soul/spirit/innocence remains as it did in its life since none of us will ever know until we each take that same journey, hopefully many years from now (for all of us).
I just discovered this comic, thanks to the webtip from my favourite radiostation, and I can’t say how much I love this story and the art. just wonderful…my god, this reminds me of so many other things I read/saw, but nothing gets close to where this is standing. but please, bring back Townsen
Annabelle: “I wonder what Charles is gonna do with all the feathers?”
You haven’t learned yet. Continuity? Plan? Such things do not exist in the universe of Charles Christopher! :) This comic has almost as many open threads as there are strips! And I think Kerschl meant it to be that way from the first strip.
And I think that makes this strip even more enjoyable to follow!
He’s going to get Townsen back from the sunbird. I think. I had a weird dream where I read the whole comic from a book. So now I know what would happen in the end if reality would be the same as my dream. It’s confusing, but also nice. And surreal.
eer wait. I wanted to say that Charles Christopher’s expression in the fourth panel is the best one so far. He looks so determined. Love it. Thank you and bye.
@Aeonsama: I kinda thought this too… Or not exploded into feathers, so much as morphed into them… Like maybe that was how the ravens/crows took Townsen to the afterlife or wherever he’s going.
I’ve just read the entire run of this strip, and while I’m loving it to death, this particular installment has an error: there’s no “Next” link to click. Please fix. :)
Actually! Crows are among the most intelligent bird species. Also, it’s curious that they’re always represented ominously in comics, because in real-life they are all BUT ominous and glommy. They’re actually cute, and even ridiculous (ever saw a crow walking?). Like all birds, in fact.
Crows are HILARIOUS in real life.
But they can be ominous, too. And I mean, enough people must know it, them being called a MURDER in groups.
A murder of crows…
Sorry that was weird.
Alright, I’ve been staring down those branches for a good half hour now, and I can see maybe two different Townsen’s. Is it just his face or him curled up with his head towards the bottom? Or are we all hallucinating?
Karl? What’s the verdict, man?
Love your strip, never seen anything like it. the artwork is beautiful. i thought i was going to cry when charles found townsen. im addicted to this comic and i just started reading it today. you arived just in time, Opus is out of the picture.

Woah – first comment? :P What is CC picking up all the feathers for? I love his expression in panel 4… :D
November 26th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Ah, but were the birds really there in panel three?

I don’t trust those birds. I think they’re in cahoots with the humans.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:13 am
I know we all say it, but I absolutely love this comic. Karl’s art gets me every time. The facial expressions say it all.

ooooohhhh, I forgot, he woke up from that dream, but he’d fallen asleep cradling Townsen. WTF, birds?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:26 am
In some cultures, Crows and ravens are viewed as intermediaries between this world and the afterlife. Could it be that way here?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:54 am

The collective term for crows comes to mind – a murder or crows, really matches CC’s Expression
November 27th, 2008 at 12:47 am
Didn’t townsen explode into feathers? And yes , I have to say this too, I LOVE CC.
November 27th, 2008 at 2:56 am
And the birds go POOF.
Man, I’m with the rest of you, those darn birdies are da’gon tricky lil’ devils! With Apparition powers!

November 27th, 2008 at 7:17 am
@Steve: feathers for disguise
That made me laugh :) He definitely looks like he’s got a plan or gained vital knowledge there (with the leaves/feathers).

Poor Townsend…
November 29th, 2008 at 2:54 am

November 29th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
I believe you can fly, Charles. I believe you can touch the sky.
TOWNSEN ;__;

I see the silouette of Townsen in branches of the last panel. I must be sick. :(
December 3rd, 2008 at 10:59 am
@waldo: I see it to, I wonder if he ment for it to be there. Kind of wierd yet also cool if he didnt mean that to happen.

I’ve just been plowing through the archives and I have no idea what the heck I’ve been reading… But I will continue reading it, that’s for sure!
December 4th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
CC is channeling Chuck Norris in that 4th panel. The birds were so freaked that they flew away!
…either that or they weren’t really there BUT still. He’s big and bad and THEY TOOK HIS LIL BUDDY so this is SRS BIZNES.
