Well well – and what do we have here . If I go by the title that you gave – what change can we expect . Super artwork as usual . THe “swoop” lines of the feathers make it look like they are moving through tubes in the air . “Curious and curiouser” .
I love strips like this (depsite the agony of waiting until next week). The reason why is that I think that they almost flawlessly set up the “mythology” of Charles world in a very subtle fashion .
Which is great as too much of modern fiction shoves the mythology down your throat, instead of revealing it through the story (which should be the main focus).
Wow, just love this. Read and re-read all of it today. As I think RangerLee pointed out, don’t think you’re capable of making ugly, or even not pretty drawings. Can’t wait for next week. And also, I’d love to have those two food- advertising salesmen on a T. See you next week.
Those appear to be sea otters, but that means that cliff is a shoreline and prevailing winds along a seashore are towards or away from the land, so what blew them out to sea and back again? It is a mystery!
I bet Moonbear went through something similar to this. That fox is going to come back as a forest spirit and help CC kick some human civilization butt.
wonderful as always, but it’s becoming a hard time for me to wait for some hint of where everything steers to…well, at least i can admire your strips every week, no matter how hard the waiting periods are
I just recently discovered this comic…it’s fabulous! The suspense rivals even that of Sluggy Freelance (over there he’s just now revealing something that he’s been working on for NINE YEARS). The weekly format is going to kill me, though….I’m not known for being patient!
Hm, reminds me of a bit of Maori culture with the belief that the spirit travels along the coast of NZ to a specific tree near the coast, after death.
I’m not sure of the specifics, but this just reminded me.
I’ve been reading Charles for ages, but am not the type to comment very often. I think you are getting Karl’s best work with this strip because it is a personal project, versus the jobs he has to do. Karl you are a very expressive artist and this comic is always very fun to read. Thanks for sharing it with us.
The thing that brings hope to my tiny heart, is the title. I looked up the title defanition and got
ref·or·ma·tion
The act of reforming or the state of being reformed.
I’m hoping it’s the reformation of a cetain fox…. and not the
16th-century movement in Western Europe that aimed at reforming some doctrines and practices of the Roman Catholic Church and resulted in the establishment of the Protestant churches….
ok… not to self… work on the humour… can’t wait till next week
I just ran across this comic today and have read all of it. Your artwork is positively breathtaking, and your story is very evocative — only took me a half-hour to read but still left me nearly in tears for poor Townsen. The way you portray Charles’ innocence is especially fascinating — he’s this great hulking thing, but he has the mind of a child and is so loving and gentle. You can tell he has emotions and hopes and fears just like we do.
I love it. Great supplemental characters and humor. Can’t wait to see more!
i just started reading this strip (just went through the whole archive). the characters and the artwork are stunning. i can’t wait to see where this is all going. also, the skunks are the funniest damn thing ever.

January 14th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

January 14th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
Oh, great. Now how’s he supposed to get up there? Or…I could see CC shaking that tree for all it’s worth.
That ‘lion’ is just jerking him around. =P

Otters are the surfer dudes & dudettes of the animal kingdom. Frolicsome, energetic and yet mellow at the same time.
