Mascotting
I’m leaving for New York tomorrow, so hopefully I’ll see some of you at the show (the details of my table location are listed in the blog below).
I’m going to bring a few Abominable shirts and some prints, but mostly I’ll be sketching, sketching, sketching! So bring your sketchbooks!
And… I’m off! GO ROMPERS!

“Don’t eat me” BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LOVE IT!
Also love the otter on Charles’ head in the last panel. Rapid-fire questions, like an over-stimulated two-year-old. Awesomeness!
I’m curious to see what “sport” the otters play.
February 4th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
South-bend, isn’t there a caterer from South-bend?
February 4th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
I want a “Don’t eat me!” t-shirt
February 4th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
the otter on Charles’ head is definitely my favorite as well!
February 4th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Oh my goodness, I love the “Don’t eat me part!” I also love how the South-bend Sliders would be sufficiently represented by an abominable furry man-like creature as their mascot hahaha love it! Ugh I won’t be able to go to the New York convention, I would’ve loved to meet you and get some acc gear!
February 4th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Rompers @ the sliders is it?
eh, i’ve always been more of a scamperers fan myself.
On a side note, i’m totally hearing the goblins voice from warhammer, when I read the crab’s line.
February 4th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
love the otters!
(looks like we both have a love of otters – they are damn adorable. don’t even get me started on the platypus…)
February 4th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
rofl at the crab “don’t eat me!” AHHAHAHHAAH awesome
February 4th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
yea, I agree. I love the third panel… “don’t eat me”
February 4th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Crab = WIN. (I seriously LOL’d)
That is all.
February 4th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
hilarious! i love the cheerful, talkative otters! another wonderful strip – thank you.
February 4th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
The otters have to be English – the “crisp” is a dead give-away. Ramon – Lucy van Pelt has her booth open if you want to discus the platypus . (:>))
February 4th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
munch.munch. crisp.crisp.mmm reminds me of how my brother and I would bug my dad when he’d watch the football game! 面白いぞう!
February 4th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
I have to call crabs “crisps” now. They ARE crispy.
On a side note, every time I see a
crabcrisp in a comic(ANY comic!), they’re pretty funny. More comics should havecrabscrisps.February 5th, 2009 at 12:09 am
I love the fact that the otters call crabs “crisps”.
So are the Rompers and Sliders actual teams, or made up? (I thought they were made up until I read the note under the comic…now I’m not so sure)
February 5th, 2009 at 12:15 am
Poor Charles. Yeah, I hate it when my food talks back to me, too. XD
I love his expression in the last panel as he stares at the thing.
February 5th, 2009 at 12:52 am
Yeah, definitely English.
Another language cue is the ‘then’ at the end of a question. “Who’s he then?” “What’s this for then?” etc.
I love your work, as always.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:49 am
I love otters…
February 5th, 2009 at 4:09 am
Poor little crab =(
That’s…life i guess.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:11 am
I too love otters. They have been very well represented here. As have crabs.
February 5th, 2009 at 5:06 am
A vaguely, yet cuter, version of the feast of the Skeksis from Dark Crystal.
February 5th, 2009 at 8:33 am
The otter on Charles’ head reminds me sooo much of Townsen.
Anyone else get that?
He should become a regular in Townsen’s absence.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:17 am
… “He’s keeping… mum.” – how wonderfully genteel…
… marvelous as ever… off you go then, sell your shirts-of-happiness…
February 5th, 2009 at 10:05 am
OMG OTTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
…that’s all I have to say.
February 5th, 2009 at 10:12 am
cool as always
February 5th, 2009 at 11:01 am
Karl, are you familiar with a book based on a german fairy tale called “Iron John”, by Robert Bly? The fairy tale features a big hairy character who represents the Natural Man, supposed to be a man in his natural state. The book has become basic reading for anyone interested in the emerging Masculist Movement.
Anyway, Charles always reminds me of that character in the fairy tale. Google it and see!
February 5th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
gotta love football.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
“Don’t eat meeee!” LOL
The otter on CC’s head is my favorite as well, though the one eating the ottercrisps (read: crabs) is funny. I thought they were English in the last episode; I heard “Are you quite well?” in Terry-Thomas’ voice.
Yes, yes. Fan of Disney’s ‘Robin Hood’ and all that. *feels a bit dated*
February 5th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
otters & platypus = coolness!!
I have no idea where this story is going but sure as hell enjoying the journey
February 5th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Those otters remind me of these otters:

February 5th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
What kind of sport is it? Let’s look at the clues.
1. It has romping.
2. It has sliding.
3. It is probably played in water….by otters.
4. It has a big furry mascot.
Put these together and you get….Splash Rugby.
February 5th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
The inherent British-ness to the otter’s dialogue is flawless (although the use of “crisp” is a bit of a give-away). Only the removal of superfluous “H”s could make it more so…
February 5th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
I love that fact that he’s calling the crab a crisp and has a whole bag of them. Can’t eat just one. I love it.
February 6th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
Pedro- I thought the same thing about the otter seeming Townson-esque!!
Hope everyone’s enjoying NYC. I wanted to be there too, but I’m a poor college student (one day… I will have a ABCC print… one day….)
February 7th, 2009 at 8:10 am
For some reason i’m thinking the crab has a Hans Moleman-ish voice.
“Don’t eat me!”
February 8th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
hehe Poor crab.
February 8th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
Your characters are so brilliant. Wuv.
February 9th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Poor crab? He’s the only one in the bucket that might survive!
Maybe.
February 9th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
I just knew that was a brit otter the moment I heard him speak. South-Bend forever!
February 10th, 2009 at 3:32 am
I love this one a ton – as a fan of otters and the watching of organized sports especially. It’s just so great how Charles’ lack of reply immediately rouses suspicion: “You’re one of THEM, aren’t you?!”
Of course, being Brits (as otters go), they’re easily able to maintain that air of detached curiosity while bringing up those suspicions.
February 10th, 2009 at 8:32 am
ahh, awesome comic. I found it linked to a photo Hawk posted from his NYC photos and loved it.
go you! this is seriously a must read for me every week now.
February 10th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Hey man, thank you for the shirt, and apologize to Cameron Stewart for me, next time I shall buy a book, and perhaps another shirt. Keep up the good work, and it was awesome to meet you both at NYCC on sunday.
February 11th, 2009 at 1:08 am
I like the way that, suspicious or not, the otters turn Charles into furniture. Much like a pack of 14 year old boys watching television flopping all over the furniture.
February 11th, 2009 at 6:03 am
I love this site, I love this comic. It beautifully drawn and written. I just wish it didn’t take so long to draw so I got more of this lovely comic every week.
February 11th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
My favorite part is the dazed expression on ACC’s face in the last panel, and the way he’s staring numbly at the crab while everyone else is having an ottery picnic all around him. Maybe they are from Ottery St. Mary?
June 9th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
“Who’s this guy?” – ‘guy’ should really be chap or fellow. Love it! And still months to go before I catch up. Must take my time. yes.
December 26th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Reading through from the beginning… if this game does not turn out to be OTTER POLO, I must say I will be most disappointed.
Charming. Considering a print purchase, and will be looking for your work for the big wheels. <3
June 11th, 2010 at 4:25 pm
“Who are you for, then?” is a GREAT line. It is deeply meaningful to Chuck but the otter has no idea.
February 4th, 2011 at 5:19 pm
What are the rompers…is it an otter swim team or something?
February 22nd, 2011 at 7:35 pm
Fantastic! I was hoping to see more otters
They’re my favourite animal!
