Aww, poor Vivol! I can’t tell if he’s annoyed with the question or if he’s just depressed that he can’t help ’cause he doesn’t have the experience. He looks more depressed than annoyed to me, though.
This is one of the few times that Karl has indicated the next episode – feel that there will be revelations coming . Now if he would be so kind as to let us know when we might expect to re-connect with Charles and his quest . . . . . . (hoping – he said)
I really like this one, for the concept and for how it develops the characters more (particularly Vivol).
I tend to like the moderately sad comics, for some reason.
The only thing that seemed out-of-place was the rabbit’s expression in the 2nd-last panel; it looks like a repeat of panel 3, though I can see by looking closely that it isn’t.
i am particularly moved by the emotion that all of a sudden emerges from vivol’s pause between panel 4 and 5. it is so heavy with a memory…but what memory?
Lyon :”Read the title of this week’s strip again, Maxinemf. I get the impression Vivol has had entirely TOO MUCH experience in the area of heartbreak.”
@Lyon: Oh, haha, yeah, I did miss the title (I always read these when I’m on the go). My apologies. Like I said, though, I did lean more towards the feeling of “heartbreak,” anyways. Thank you.
Java, I, too, have always imagined Vivol’s voice to be a Russian accent.
I always imagined Townsend’s to be like the little cockney dog from the Warner Bros cartoon, hanging around the big dog, going “We’re gonna chase us some cats today, ain’t we?Sure we are!Want me to go fetch a stick for you?Nah!How about a bone?Wanna see me do a trick?” … All running together in one nonstop monologue.
I imagine the lion’s voice to be dark and silky, almost serpent-like but with no sibilant hiss – a voice like that of a cartoon villain or demon.
I thought Townsend’s mother should sound like Angela Lansbury.
@ESN: I agree. I think the impact would have been slightly better if the rabbit’s mouth was just barely open. And the “but” to “butt” thing, while amusing, sort of takes away from the seriousness. But as always Karl, I love this strip and your art is as beautiful as ever.
Argent Stonecutter: grizzly bears are omnivores, and they don’t eat too much meat (they do eat fish, and sometimes young moose). I don’t think that rabbits are staples of their diet, anyway; they’re probably too fast.
That nasty she-bunny doens’t deserve the suffering that the he-bunny is going through for her! She laughed at his flowers! Bad she-bunny! Does cute little he-bunny have a name? I might have missed it.
The transition from the word ‘But…’ to the panel of Vivol’s ‘butt’ was completely unintentional. It never even occurred to me until you guys pointed it out.
Vivol is certainly large enough to be a Russian Giant bear (U. a. piscivorus), usually found in Kamchatka but known elsewhere. If so, the otters had best keep their distance, as sea otters are a favorite “crisp” of the Russian Giant and, even though the otter is fast and maneuverable, the Russian Giant has learned how to hunt them.
Efogoto: Yes, like Jafar, but deeper and with more timbre. Like a cross between Jafar and Smaug.

LOL why did he ask if he was busy????? … yeah i’m busy growing my fingernail so vivol can finally reach that blade of grass… lol i hate stupid questions

nice transition from “but” to butt.
March 11th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
Ahaha. Disappointment everywhere. Not disappointment at the comic, I’m reveling at how disappointed that rabbit must be.
March 11th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
Wow! Nice, subtle use of expression for Vivol.

I can smell a tale of Vivol’s own lost love in the works… I can sense a guy burned by love from 50 paces!!!
March 11th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Only one thing to say here
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
March 11th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

March 11th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
Look forward to more Vivol & Moon Bear. Things were beginning to get pretty interesting in the last part of their story.

This is heartwrenching. :[
And it fits perfectly well with the cold, rainy weather outside.

So it’s OK for cute otters to eat self-aware crustaceans, but big mammalian predators don’t eat cute bunnies. I am so conflicted.
“Vivol cannot help you, little snack.”
Am I just too class-conscious, or is this phylum-prejudice I’m seeing?
March 12th, 2009 at 9:53 am
D’awww.
That’s all I can say.
March 12th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Poor Vivol. )=
This is a happy/sad strip. Happy that we get to see Vivol again, and sad for Vivol’s painful memories.
Looks like Vivol lost his own ‘Townsend’–a faithful and beloved companion– long ago. *sigh*
March 12th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
I feel like Vivol should have a russian accent.
:’( Fortcast sad memories!

@E=MC_horse
So the lion sounds like Jafar?
March 12th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Vivol DOES have a Russian accent. I love you, Vivol! Don’t you just want to scratch his big ol’ belly?

Love this, Karl. It’s so…. depressing of sorts, but still very good. I can’t wait for next week to see the story behind Vivol’s denial of advice.
March 14th, 2009 at 12:21 pm

Good job handling the crash between serious characters and plotlines and the more lighthearted ones. Some writers can only handle one or the other…

why would you post that….
wasn’t Townsen’s death meaningless enough?
March 17th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
No, I trust Vivol. Vivol’s belly will not rule his heart.
March 18th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Sometimes I hear Scar when that lion serpent thing talks, sometimes its James Earl Jones . . . but Vivol’s gotta be Russian.
March 18th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
yes, Russia’s just intrinsically speak in third person.
Like Colossus or Vladimir Putin
March 18th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Really? No one thought of Aslan? He’s not a tame lion.
March 18th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
I don’t know, the name Vivol almost sounds Polish to me. The dude’s Eastern European at least.
Could be Canadian though, eh?
March 18th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
I really was talking about the lion actually. I agree Vivol = russian.
October 11th, 2009 at 5:13 am
Vivol must be Russian. The Red Bear of Russia.
February 4th, 2011 at 5:22 pm
Awww…poor rabbit.
