Oh no!!!
*shakes his head quickly to rid himself of the thought*
I cant even imagine a fate like that for poor Townsen.
Be brave Charles!!!
Another fantastic panel. Well worth the wait :)
@Karl, I know, I know, I saw your Tweet last night and knew to anticipate an early strip today. Still a rad way to kick off the afternoon, even if it is a rare occurrence.
Who’s skulls are these? I’m no expert, but they look like some kind of wild cat to me, because of the pointy teeth and high location of the nasal opening. Are they modelled off anything in particular? Is it a CLUE???
Most mysterious – Omens and portends abound (fancy way to say I’m totally befuddled as to the direction of this arc .) Do appreciate the early post Karl – Many Thanks .
I am hoping the title is because of Beck’s reissue of “One Foot in the Grave” yesterday, though perhaps it is merely serendipitous, like when you’re listening to a song and the lyrics happen to match the words you’re reading on a page.
So I’m not gonna lie this strip is definitely increasing my fear of the murder of crows that have taken up residence in the trees across the road… damm things are CREEPY, besides they’re always stealing my garbage…
This is wonderful. The last two weeks have been wordless (does the pun on the crow caw “AWK” count?) stories that make you notice Charles Christopher’s journey is everyone’s journey. The detail in panel 2 is something, the way a bone would pop up if a footfall split it in two. What kind of skulls are these? This is what makes me come back every week. Even the crows seem to be asking questions with the tilt of their heads. Crows point the way. . . but to where?
they are certainly canine-like skulls…. creepy!
poor CC was ready to take on the world in panel 2, not so much anymore
as if i didn’t hate crows before this strip…
@Lynn – just the fact that a group of them is called a “murder”…*shudder* I HATE crows. They’re the one animal that I don’t slow down for if they’re in the road.
As for the comic…creepy. I hope one of those is NOT Townsend.
Oh Karl, I love it, as usual. CC’s face in the last pannel made me smile. Which it probably shouldn’t have but he’s just so damn cute! You’re awesome, I love this comic, thank you so much for sharing.
What’s with all of the hated towards crows? :( I’ve always liked them, they’re interesting birds – kind of the undertakers when vultures aren’t around… a little creepy, but they’re not *that* bad! They have kind of a macabre beauty to them, regal almost – :)
Hehe… Karl, I love this comic – I’ve been coming here since late January when I stumbled on it by mistake. I quickly read through the archives when I found it and I’ve been hooked since then! I’ve been waiting for a time to post, but I didn’t want to sound like I was just posting what everyone else was posting. I look forward to seeing how the story-line progresses (but I like the little side-trips too!) I love the lazy raccoons – I’m definitely partial to raccoons – :)
Another killer strip, Karl. I love the ravens. Ravens and crows are not to be feared. They simply have had bad publicity over the years. They are wondeful, beautiful, social birds who are a lot more intelligent than most are aware.
And, if push comes to shove, they are excellent eating. Of course, they think the same about us, too. ;-)
But the raven is a more sinister figure in Scandinavian mythology than it is in the Americas among the Native Americans. They are intelligent birds and fun to watch as they work out the inwardness of a thing or problem.
Crow hatred? If you lived in Japan like I do, you would find them incredibly annoying buggers. What raccoons and bears are back home to garbage, cats and crows are here. I’ve been dive bombed by a mama crow that didn’t want me near her tree. Lots of attacks on people by crows. Big bloody buggers, and dangerous actually. No one messes with them.
Count me amongst the PVP readers who have just found your strip. Count me, also, amongst those who will continue reading. I just read all the way through the archives and I am seriously hooked.
Seeing this strip as the first one and then reading up to it through the archives was an interesting experience. I didn’t understand the significance until I came full circle, as it were.
Chalk up another new fan eagerly awaiting new strips courtesy your guest stint on PvP. I devoured the archive and was sent on such a roller coaster of emotions. I can only imagine what it has been like for established readers having to wait a week for an update after those heartbreaking ones with Townsen (sp?)
New reader from PvP here. After breezing through the archive, I offer you the best compliment I can possibly think of: This is the second coming of Bone. Keep it up!
What, wait, really? I’ve reached the latest one already? This is absolutely amazing! Your artwork is so wonderfully expressive, and what dialogue there is is down pat. Another PvP wanderer…
A sad cliffhanger, that means next week we are going to get some woodland creature comic relief. Not that I don’t love every comic that has come out so far, but having just started reading I have gotten spoiled by being able to read a bunch at once. This comic needs to update more often, it is too well done to limit my intake to one a week. *scratches his arms* I gotta get my fix man!
Sometimes crows can be useful… like say you’re a retired hopi god hanging out in the pacific northwest, and you forgot to get enough packets of “Sugar in the Raw” for your Mocha Lattechino… let’s see if this site will let me link to a picture, soon as I find it… http://us-p.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Blotch/norestforthewicked.jpg
The nice thing about coming across a great comic like this 2 years in progress, is you don’t have to wait to read the first 2 years of comics. And now here I am, eagerly awaiting more… damn it… Keep up the great work Karl.

eeeep!
(on another note, i never imagined CC’s toes like that…they look familiar)
April 15th, 2009 at 11:50 am
Charles Christopher with lunch, I could totally get used to this!
April 15th, 2009 at 11:58 am
@Noah Woah! Don’t get TOO comfortable there. ;)
April 15th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
scary indeed!
April 15th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Are those snow-men bones over there?
April 15th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
@Karl, I know, I know, I saw your Tweet last night and knew to anticipate an early strip today. Still a rad way to kick off the afternoon, even if it is a rare occurrence.
April 15th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Incidentally (and more relative to today’s strip), I saw a crow this weekend. You forget how gigantic and scary those birds really are.
April 15th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Those must be the bones of all the enemies that Townsen has slain in his time as the Undead Fox Ninja from Heck.
I don’t even wanna consider the alternative.
April 15th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Somebody mentioned it last week, and today’s strip underscores the similarity: This scene is eerily reminiscent of Miyazaki’s “Princess Mononoke”.
“You are VERY wise. You know better than to step foot on this island.”

Haha Charles is such a four year old kid :D “OMG bones! So scary!” Love it.
April 15th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
CC seems like a brave little kid walking into a dark hallway. I’m continually impressed with how you make us care for him. Great stuff!

Chuck’s toenails look remarkably tidy for someone who lives in the forest and where no socks. :)

He… bites them?
April 15th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Be brave Charles!

oh snap, it’s the Elephant Graveyard!
April 15th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Nice layout on this page
April 15th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
I just noticed the skull in the last panel has its lower jawbone still intact, like it’s screaming. This sh*t is getting creepy.
April 15th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
I’ve just decided I’d like to sit down with Charles and share a box of beer and a pizza! He’s my kinda giant hairy dude!
April 15th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
RUN AWAY CC RUN AWAY!
April 15th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Wolf bones…? Oh dear.
April 15th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Total Redwall vibe in this one – I love it.

Or rather, I hope that Townsend is not one of those…(it’s late, my grasp of the English language is lapsing)
April 16th, 2009 at 12:52 am
@musicalfingers – harsh. i have a pet crow, and they’re actually really intelligent, lovable creatures.
April 16th, 2009 at 1:41 am
Be brave, CC!
I just wanna hug him in that last panel!
April 16th, 2009 at 2:49 am
Please oh please publish this as a written novel someday. Please. :D
April 16th, 2009 at 5:17 am
I seriously don’t know how u do this every week, considering you probably have many other deadlines to keep!
..You can DO IT, Charlie!

Wooow! I found you thanks to your gueststrip over at PVP.
I love this and will definitely check back every wednesday.
Any plans for a book release?

Holy…! Wow, two days after the update and this has almost twice as many comments as usual after a week. Pvp update certainly put you out there again.
April 17th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Oh! Poor charles! The expression on his face in the last panel is adorable but sad…
April 17th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
just want to post my gratitude for the great job you do with this comic.

musicalfingers said: “I HATE crows. They’re the one animal that I don’t slow down for if they’re in the road.”
Crows or Yaqui shaman named don Juan Matus? read your Castaneda and you might slow down when you see one in the road.
Karl, again, wonderful work.
April 20th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
So Karl…when’s the book? There’s gonna be a graphic novel compilation of the CC comics right? …. Right?!? :)
April 20th, 2009 at 8:00 pm

Charles Christopher pairs well with FF7 Piano music… today’s strip with “One Winged Angel.”
April 21st, 2009 at 11:20 am
oh jeez, is that townsen and his brothers? so sad. :(
April 21st, 2009 at 12:56 pm
No need to slow down for crows in the road. They are smart enough, and quick enough, to get out of the way on their own.
