Out Of Hand
Here’s a snapshot of the rough pencils for this strip. You may notice that I made some changes in the final stages of production to make things more clear.
I’m thinking of setting up a webcam soon so you can watch live streaming of the inking and colouring processes (for those of you who are interested in that long, tedious process. :)

Been waiting all evening for this! Glad to see the crows (maybe) getting some comeuppance.

Oooh, dramatic. But, I’m not sure what direction the wind is supposed to be going. Towards the tree or away.
April 22nd, 2009 at 8:14 pm
winds of change perhaps?

Karl, thank you for Charles Christopher. I have been reading it for a long time now and haven’t commented before; it’s my birthday, and it strikes me that the whole comic feels like a special gift. It brings so many people joy, and I feel thankful in general. :)
Your draughtsmanship is excellent, but doesn’t feel stiff; you’ve indicated an intuitive approach to the storyline and composition that comes through in a natural but skillfil way. It’s all so pleasing.
Thanks, and thanks for keeping it up! Greatly looking forward to seeing more.

Karl: WOW Nathaniel: Happy Birthday

The art is as beautiful as ever, but I think the story is in danger of starting to drag. I’d like to see it progress a little more.

i LOVE the birds getting sucked up into the tree – LOVE THEM!
there is so much momentum in this strip. and the face on CC in panel 6 is such an expression of anguish and fortitude in his squint.
i don’t think the story is dragging on at all. clearly, it’s just starting to pick up!

Talk about Divine Winds!

Beautiful artwork and great storyline. I’m a new follower from the PvP guest strip — very happy to have found this. This strip, especially the crows, remind me a lot of the mood elements from the Danish “Valhalla” comics by Peter Madsen. I mean that as a great compliment! Please keep up the good work. :)

I love CC’s expression in the third panel. :O
More than anything, I wanna know what could be sucking things up into the tree with that much force!
April 23rd, 2009 at 1:27 am
HOOOO? You know who that is… CTHULION!
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:22 am
That’s definitely the safest tree I’ve ever seen
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:04 am
I just discovered this comic strip. simply amazing the wild array or emotions you can spread. and how you can quickly turn a serious situation into a humorous one is just magnificent. you now have a man who will follow this strip until the very end.
Great work Karl.

Cant help but think the birds are eating the remains of townsen in panel one.
April 23rd, 2009 at 5:06 am
At first I thought Charles was howling and blasting them away o.o
Yet again, another good strip Karl.
April 23rd, 2009 at 7:21 am
No way, Jonboy! Townsen lives!
April 23rd, 2009 at 8:16 am
The last panel, with the vague, fogged out shape of the tree, is amazing. Keep the focus on the hands and the feather, everything else blurs away. It’s so. damned. good.
April 23rd, 2009 at 8:42 am
Hooooooooooooooooooooooo!
April 23rd, 2009 at 11:44 am
I would love a live stream of your inking and coloring processes! That would be amazing. Wonderful work on this strip, as always! I look forward to your updates every week. :)
April 23rd, 2009 at 11:58 am
Absolutely stunning, per usual. :)
I would like to see how you do this too. I love it when my favourite artists show their videos of how art’s created. It never manages to blow the illusions for me.
April 23rd, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Video: yes, please! I’d love to see your process!
April 23rd, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Follow that feather!!
I doubt very much that I will look at crows the same way ever again. *shudder*
April 23rd, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Oh yes, I want to see the video, too! I would definitely watch!
April 23rd, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Karl, I would be very interested in that long, tedious process. Your artwork is a thing of beauty. Any time I can see an artist’s process, it is an unparalleled educational experience.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:53 pm
I for one would totally support inking/coloring footage.
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Oh man, I’d tune in to a stream like that for -shizzle-. Was cool seeing the sketch, too. I presume you do all or have done many of these in that sketchbook, given the inked strip above that one?
April 23rd, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Ok Kerschl we get it, mood established: time to pick up the pace again.
April 23rd, 2009 at 7:53 pm
Beautiful work my friend!! I’m sure many people would love to see your process. Nice to see your sketches as well!!
April 24th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Townsen is dead. Calling it.
April 24th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Awesome art! Dramic series you have going on here..
April 24th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
I found this through your beautiful guest strip at PvP and I can only say…well…I don’t know what to say. I zipped through the archives and loved them so much I immediately went through them again. And that means now I have to wait a whole week just like everyone else for the next installment!
Anyways, I can’t wait to see where the story goes. Thanks for your beautiful art.
April 26th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Great stuff, I for one would also be interested in watching the production process especially the coloring part =)
April 27th, 2009 at 4:54 am
Pending a hard-drive crash, I’ve been away from TACC for a month or so.
Needless to say I’m an anxious as ever to see the next strip to try and shed some light on what this is on about.
April 27th, 2009 at 11:50 am
I really love this comic. I have a question, or a request, really. Could you link the URLs of the comic in different languages? I have friends that don’t speak english that I think would really like it :)
April 27th, 2009 at 11:56 am
I’m not sure what you mean, peachfuzz. Are you talking about the titles of the links to the translations on the sidebar? I could make a mouseover that displays the name of the comic in the language of that particular site.
April 27th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Lovely work as always, and a webcam would be kind of rad.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:40 am
Karl, you’re doing a terrific job with this strip. I just found out about Charles today, and this is one of the best comic strips I’ve ever read! Cheers! I’m a fledgling comic book artist myself….found myself gawking at your skill from time to time.
April 28th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Is it wednesday yet
April 28th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
I would really appreciate a video of the inking and coloring process. Your artwork is incredible.
April 29th, 2009 at 8:23 am
Do the ravens have something to do with the Turnfalken?
April 30th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Fantastic comic, finally got a chance to read the whole thing since you did a guest strip for PVP. Beautiful artwork and storytelling!
August 16th, 2009 at 8:36 am
Beautiful pencils, and I’m also longing for the production footage.
Particularly I’d like to know how you end up with such gorgeous inking from all that abundant penciling (I’d never be able to choose which lines to ink and how).
Great work!
December 29th, 2009 at 4:09 am
Ok, now it’s on like it looks.
Beautiful artwork :D
