Guest Strip – David Petersen
I proudly present the first of the Abominable guest strips.
You may already know David Petersen’s work from his acclaimed series ‘Mouse Guard‘, which tells the tale of a group of mice struggling to survive and prosper in a world of predators. David manages to infuse his stories with such a sense of nobility and serenity that I find myself relating to the characters (and, subsequently, the author!) from the first few panels.
I knew he’d capture the tone of Charles Christopher perfectly and I’m honored to present his work here. If you haven’t read Mouse Guard, please do! There are two beautiful hardcovers available from Archaia Studios and you can follow David’s progress on his blog.
Thank you, David!
UPDATE: Some of you have asked about prints of this strip: I won’t be selling prints of the guest strips because I don’t think they’re mine to sell. They’re donated to me out of kindness and I won’t commercialize that. The best thing you can do is to buy a copy of David’s book, or perhaps commission a drawing from him directly.

There is too licking in snail checkers, I have the rulebook right here.
More like this please, lol.

But… Licking is the best part! Just like Toad chess, only less interactive.

Panel three’s dialogue is brilliant, gonna ponder that for days

I like it and I’m a HUGE Mouse Guard fan.
This is the first Wednesday I’ve checked in (I found the site on Sunday and read through everything so far), I’m not sure I can handle the wait till the story continues … I’m in withdrawal already.

I love how the king snail in panel three actually looks smug although it doesn’t really have much of a face. And the dialogue is brilliant, too!
and the ‘eep!’
July 8th, 2009 at 11:53 am
I can hear the disgust in his voice as he says “There is no ‘licking’ in snail-checkers”. Absolutely lovely!

Wonderful!

Whaaat? Guest strip from Mr. Petersen? How delightful!
And what a great strip it is, too. I can’t wait until next week.

Wonderful! That King snail seems so wise yet haughty. I love it.
July 8th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
That is so awesome that you got David Petersen to guest. Absolutely love Mouse Guard. Does the signed print deal work for guest comics as well?

Crazy Woodland Hijinks! Thank Loki and Michabo!

Funny, first look and I was, like, Mouse Guard!?! Wonderful.

I always figured TACC to be a Chess player…

Is it allowable to make icons for personal use? I’m imagining Panel Three, I love it!
July 9th, 2009 at 7:09 am
Wow, the crosshatched background on the last panel is stunning… it’s a small detail but it really makes the whole piece for me.
July 9th, 2009 at 8:06 am
So, we’re not getting a REAL strip this week?
July 9th, 2009 at 8:15 am
Hey all! I’m glad you guys are enjoying David’s guest strip. I think snail checkers is a brilliant idea.
Some of you have asked about prints of this strip: I won’t be selling prints of the guest strips because I don’t think they’re mine to sell. They’re donated to me out of kindness and I won’t commercialize that. The best thing you can do is to buy a copy of David’s book, or commission a drawing from him directly.
As far as making icons of panels, I say go for it!!

Euuuughh, snail licking! XP I love the little crown on the ‘kinged’ snail though.
LOL I shall think of this strip when I see snails now. XD Good show, David!

I love the King snail’s “Mr Monopoly” moustache.
July 9th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Excellent. He has captured the spirit of TACC perfectly.
July 10th, 2009 at 2:13 am
Great stuff. Me like!

I understand why no prints – but damn, I really want a T-shirt with the third panel on it. No one would get it and I would have a reason to smile knowingly and reply “snail checkers”
If I beg would that help at all??? e_e
July 11th, 2009 at 6:27 am
There is no begging in snail checkers!
July 12th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
Can David Petersen sell prints?
July 13th, 2009 at 8:04 am
This begs me to ask the question…. from where did he get the checkerboard? O.O
July 13th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
Denaya: a big foot like creature of legend is playing with talking snails and the ONE question you have is “where did he get the checkerboard?”
suspension of disbelief is such a fickle mistress
July 14th, 2009 at 5:21 am
You need to replace the elastic in your suspenders of disbelief.
July 14th, 2009 at 7:55 am
Hehe. In a place where animals talk and legendary creatures walk the most mundane thing is the most out of place.
July 14th, 2009 at 11:32 am
There’s a simple explanation for the checkerboard; it comes free with the set of snails!
July 15th, 2009 at 9:40 am
I think of the checkerboard as a conveniently flat piece of wood with some mud stains on it. Gets the job done and it’s biodegradable.
