Expat Gentleman Seeks Companionship
My scheduled guest strip for today fell through, so I had to scramble to get a comic ready for you guys. My solution? Animals in personal ads! I think I’ll be doing a lot of these in the future.
I once shared my home with a hedgehog. His name was Blofeld and, though he made a poor first impression, was extremely affectionate and charming. This one’s for you, you huffy little beast.
And in further hedgehog relevance, it might interest you to know that in my childhood I was influenced by the wonderful Mecki character, who featured in several German children’s books. The artwork was dreamlike and a bit scary, but I loved it.
I have no idea what will be here next Wednesday, but it’ll be something!

I could use a date with this little guy :)
July 29th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
YAY!!! You’re BACK! Albeit temporarily. Don’t get me wrong, I like the guest strips, but I’d happily have 3 months of these personals instead.
You should take personals from us and draw us in … :-D

That little nose, combined with the word “snuffling” has me in little squeaks. Superb!
July 29th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Aww, no phone number? :P
July 29th, 2009 at 2:28 pm

July 29th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
I love the “huffy” part.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
It’s not so bad skipping a week or two… :-)
July 29th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
If I could scramble and make something that beautiful I could die a happy woman. O.o Wonderful, so wonderful.
July 29th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Can we have one with Sissi Skunk next? Please, please, pleeeease?
July 29th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Disposition: Huffy XD
When I sought a mate, proper hygiene was a must for me also, so I can understand where Tarek is coming from. (My fiance is a clean sort of guy. *g*)
Fun stuff! I can’t wait to see what the young porcupine’s personal might be like. “I am young, single, and ready to mingle!” XD
July 29th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
I love it! The little ears, and the nose…he’s probably looking for someone with 4 legs, not 2, huh?
July 29th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Wow, that right there is a whole new strip idea in itself. I dare you to keep going until you run out of animals in the Wild Kingdom. :)
July 29th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Fun stuff Karl. Here’s hoping the fill in today didn’t cramp your schedule today.

It’s nice to be reminded once in a while How Awesome You Draw! ;)
(great work!)

This made me think of two words man: trading cards. You’ll make a fortune. Get on it, NOW.

July 29th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
I agree with Lyon. Good thinkin’, buddy!
July 29th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
This… is awesome. Welcome back! (if only temporarily) And… Lyon might have something there. That, or, I’m seeing a daily comic in the newspaper out of this. Kind of like a “Love is…” for the furry population.
July 29th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
I love this! Today’s kinda reminds me of those Mark Trail comic strips but TOTALLY in a good way. :)
July 30th, 2009 at 1:58 am
Ha, i got many of those Mecki-Books. Unfortunately there is only one left. Mecki and the seven Drwaves (Mecki bei den sieben Zwergen). Real nice stuff. :-)

I was in Kenya for high school and once found one of these on our front porch. They really are pretty darn cute, if not exactly cuddly.

I was highly influenced by a children’s book with a similar artstyle. The heroine was a smaller one of these creatures and went through an alice-in-wonderland-like trek through unreal, dreamlike parts of a forest. All sorts of scary things happened to her. It was like a twisted horror movie, but I loved it. I think it might be because of all the giant bugs and the great art.

I’ll do a guest strip next wednesday =D Ha ha.
Hedgehogs are so cute.

“Proper hygiene a MUST” !!
If I ever put up a personal ad, that line MUST be included!
July 30th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Haha I was thinking of the cartoon krecik actually.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
I love this one !
I’m Lactose intolerant too :D
July 31st, 2009 at 11:50 am
Darn it, yet another ’snuffling for grubs’ in the personals. Seems I’m losing my unique edge.
August 1st, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Wow, lol.
August 2nd, 2009 at 12:14 am
Personally, I love the “expat” touch. An african hedgehog- that’s a whole other backstory to cover. ^_^
August 2nd, 2009 at 1:04 am
Yes! More personals! Man I Love this strip!
August 3rd, 2009 at 5:19 am
Ah hedgehogs. They’re my favourite animal. It probably started because I loved Sonic the Hedgehog as a kid. Still do, actually; he’s my hero. So then I got a hedgehog while I was a kid, and then realized how adorable and awesome they are in real life. Now my hero’s a hedgehog, and the hedgehog is totally my favourite animal.
Just so you know ;)

You never cease to amaze me! Really looking forward to your hard cover stuff. They will definitely become gifts for my entire family.
August 17th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
What is proper hygiene for a hedgehog? hehe Cute.
August 26th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
I’m now buying a hedgehog, thanks to this comic. I read this the day it first came out and fell in love with the adorable little guys after reading about them. Thanks for getting me interested!
February 17th, 2010 at 10:07 pm
Rereading this, I realized he’s lactose intolerant. hahahahaha
Guess he doesn’t have to worry about whether or not he gets to the milk bowl first!
