  1. Rico Penguin

I can’t even count the times I’ve been caught doing this.

  2. Alex

Now there’s a tree hugger I’d be proud to hangout with!

  3. Koia

hehe on the last panel it almost looks asif he’s romanticly making out with the tree, holding it in a passionate embrace

  4. E=MC_horse

Yeah, but tree sap will only carry so far. It takes a load of sap to make even a small bottle of syrup and Charles is a big fellow.

  5. Ditte

Hah, this reminds me of the scene in Totoro in the rain :) Lovely!

  6. ramon

    heh, cute :P

though, i have to say, the first time i read it i thought the “bloop” read “blood”… so the first time around i was “WHHHHAAAAAAAAAT!?”

  7. arkady62

    yummy!

  8. brushtail

soon he will be an abominable syrup man.

  9. AshFin

Poor fellow, finds food in all the strange places.
    But, at least he’s eating.
    <3

  10. karl

Blood??! Oh, man, that’s not good. Maybe I should extend that ‘P’ a bit!

  11. Joe D

    …is Charles frenching that tree?

  12. John k

I can’t imagine how baddly it would stink to get sap in ones hair, much less fur!

  13. RobinWilliamScott

Charles has a yellow belly? :-D
I love this strip. Scott McLoud talks about the magic of comics happening between the panels and I’m thinking that when I look at the last two. I’m imagining this cloud of dust as Charles makes the connection between the taste and the possibility that there might be more of that flavour to come …

It’s lovely to have the real story back up and running … not that I didn’t like the other stuff, but, yeah, I LOVE this.

  14. Shadowclad

Charles has a yellow belly? I always thought it was kinda faunish-beige. :)

I cringe at the thought of catching a splinter on one’s tongue.

  15. Cesare

He’s never going to get that stuff out of his fur . .. .and I love how he always looks so startled

  16. Samjones

I still remember tasting aspen sap as a small boy, thinking it would by like honey or syrup, and it was bitter enough to brand the moment in my memory for life! Stick to Maples, Charles!

  17. ferry

did not look like blood to me. Good work as usual

  18. Stephen

Sorry, but this is gonna get wrecked in the photoshop innuendo department.

  19. Argent Stonecutter

    @Stephen – Don’t even hint at Rul…. AUGH

  20. Lyon

    Mmmmm… tree…

  21. Razor

LOL I can’t wait for next Wednesday when CC comes crashing out of the bushes as an abominable leaf monster, scattering forest creatures right and left as they run in terror XD

And ouch, tongue splinters D= Better be careful, Charles…

  22. E=MC_horse

Remember how (Land Before Time) the small dinosaurs looked to Cera when they came from the tar pits, all jammed together and covered with tar and sticks and leaves?

    And they didn’t have fur.

  23. Roocifer

Oh dear..does this mean next we’ll have a sugar-high ACC running about with leaves stuck to him?

  24. fakewolf

I really love the leaves stuck to CC’s head! That’s one of the things that I really love about this comic – all the wonderful, lovely attention to detail!

  25. GBeans

Hehe, I like his leaf toupee too. Are we going to see some more stylish hairstyles?

  26. Crimsongriffin

He’ll wind up looking like a tanuki if one good leaf lands on him!
Can’t help but wonder – that IS maple sap, right? Biy the shape of the leaves?

  27. sha-pow

the leaf on his shoulder says “oak” to me.

  28. james

Charles! leave that poor tree alone! no means no mister!

  29. lol

    It’s Vivol and Townsen!

  31. E=MC_horse

I certainly hope it isn’t satinwood sap, or poor Charles will be high as a kite then sleep for about three days.

  32. Jonboy

Nooo charles! It’ll make your fur sticky!

  33. karl

‘Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker’ was just a reference to the bird of the same name (and a dig at Charles, who is often cowardly).
Was it used in Calvin & Hobbes as well?

  34. i-hate-socks

i love cc’s delirium (and delight) in panel three.
he’s soooo hungry!! you are amazing at illustrating details of character karl.

  35. sco3tt

That’s right kids, try new TREE! Now with the great taste of real Pine Tar!

  36. justa

i just came across this today and read the whole archive. it’s fantastic!

  37. Matt

Awesome! I guess Charles Christopher really loves maple syrup, then…. if only he had pancakes to go with it. ;-)

  38. Argent Stonecutter

Maybe there’s a bunny with a pancake in the forest?

With apologies to Ren and Stimpy:

    “What rolls down stairs
    and over the chairs
    and into your neighbor’s dog?
    It fits on your back,
    It’s good for a snack,
    Everyone knows it’s log.
    It’s log, it’s log,
    It’s big, it’s heavy, it’s wood.
It’s log, it’s log, it’s better than bad, it’s good.”

  40. =shane white=

I haven’t been this floored with a strip since Calvin & Hobbes. It is such pure joy to watch you create this.

I hope to someday join you.

    =s=

  41. Ruby

hehe Sometimes it’s just that good.

  42. Razor

    @E=MC_horse it’s from Blammo! =D
