Sandpiper
October 2nd, 2009
Just thought I’d post this for fun. It’s a birthday card I made for my girlfriend’s dad (he’s renowned for his skinny sandpiper legs) and it’s a painting style I’ve been experimenting with.
I’m thinking of doing a book of animal paintings like this. Possibly a children’s book.
Possibly an Abominable Charles Christopher children’s book…

That’s gorgeous, Karl.
It’s digital, right? Photoshop?
An ACC Children’s book would be awesome.

First comes the Abominable Charles Christopher children’s book, then the major motion picture! You know it’s bound to happen

Audubominable, indeed!
I love those Audubon bird illustrations. Is there a complete book collection of them somewhere I can buy?

And yes, Steve, it was done in Photoshop. I sketched a quick drawing by hand and then scanned it and used it as a guide for the painting.
Same brush I use for ACC, actually!

Where do you get the time to experiment? Nice.

Here’s the book online: http://www.audubon.org/bird/boa/BOA_index.html .
“Birds of America” is available on eBay, @ Powell’s (www.powells.com), or at your local bookseller. (I’ll bet you have some local shops who’d kiss you on the mouth if you asked for something so wonderful.)
I am ready to buy your next book for my niece. And for myself, too, of course. Then we’ll be ready for ACC: The Movie.

This is amazing. This is so soft and wet and salty, I love the texture of this painting.

I have a copy of this: http://www.amazon.com/Audubons-Birds-America-Tiny-Folio/dp/0789208148/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254587909&sr=1-1 it’s pretty small but it’s got loads of pictures of prints. I love them too, I’ve got the Snowy Owl and Iceland Falcon on my wall :)

I would absolutely buy that book. My daughter is a month old, but she’ll be reading soon enough!

Karl — That’s wonderful! I’d love a book like that (and so would my animal-loving daughter). Heck, I’d love to commission a print of an animal or bird painting for our home. :)
(Oh, and hi! my first post here!)

great idea for a childrens book, I have four kids aged between 11 and 1 and I think they would all find it interesting, well done!
