Guest Strip – Skottie Young
I met Skottie Young years ago in Chicago when we were both working on different Marvel Comics projects. We talked a lot about doing our own work, experimenting with different art styles and formats, and creating comics we were passionate about. Now it’s several years later, and Skottie just hit the New York Times bestseller list with his stunning adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. If you haven’t seen this yet, please go and check it out. It’s a gorgeous hardcover edition and an example of Skottie at his fearless, energetic best.
He’s also got a 300-page hardcover sketchbook that you can buy here!
I was thrilled that Skottie agreed to do this guest strip for me. That first panel of Charles bounding cluelessly through the forest is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

Oh, I LOVE that man’s art! I bought the Woderful Wizard of Oz solely because I adored his style so much. And have been very tempted on every book I see him draw (though many he just does covers, which is always dissapointing haha!) The art in TACC is always so beautiful, but what an extra treat today to find another of my favorite artists making a guest appearance!
Thanks!

“Saint Pugnards”! Awesome. I think Skottie Young has such a unique and fantastic style. He knocked this strip out of the park.

Saint Pugnard FTW. *still snickering*
November 4th, 2009 at 9:31 am
Ok… now we need a picture of a Saint Pugnard. Maybe a Personal AD!

I love his work, great technique. Don’t be a stranger. : )

Karl – you and the rest of the tx crew should try and get Skottie to consider joining your line-up on a regular basis – I’d never heard of him until his appearance here but will make sure to check out his work . Thanks for giving us this offbeat look at Charles – much appreciated .

Very excellent artwork by Scottie Young. Interested to check out the archives for this web comic series.

“Special night” If I’d been drinking something, I’d have snarfed it up my nose for sure. LOL
Whee, CC looks so happy =)

Those two could have their own sitcom.
And I love the 70’s handlebar mustache on Charles!

Love it, actually made me laugh out loud. Thanks.

Another thing I like about TACC is that it exposes me to other artists I doubt I’d find on my own. Only so many hours in the day go to the Internet.
How about some other designer dog names?
Boxer + Schnauzer = Boozer?
Jack Russell Terrier + Affenpinscher = Jack-Aff
Skye Terrier + Shih Tzu = Skyshitz?
Thai Ridgeback + Shih Tzu + Skye Terrier = Thai-Stykz?
Mexican Hairless + Shih Tzu = Montezuma’s Revenge?

How is it that acorns always look so damn appetizing when cartoon squirrels are eating them…
November 4th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
very hilarious. I love his “old school” style… and, yes, as you point out, that opening panel is priceless!
November 4th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
That’s a damn fine guest strip. Love squirrels.

gad zooks!!!! color?!?!?
Love this strip, the 1st panel is just lovely!!!

Berke and Bill….love it.

Not only is are the comic’s strips gorgeous to begin with, but the GUEST strips are equally as beautiful! Way to raise the quality-bar!
Also, in Skottie’s backgrounds here it’s like he’s channeling Bill Watterson!
November 5th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Thanks to everyone here, and to Karl for having me.
Indeed, Watterson has been a huge influence on me an many many others. In fact, I put a nod to my 2 favorite comic strip guys in this strip. It’s not super subtle, but I wonder how many picked it up.

That’s amazing work. Obviously, I love Karl’s work and I loved all of the earlier guest strips as well, but this one is really something else. Kudos, Skottie.
November 5th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
Berkeley Breathed and Bill Watterson. Of course.
November 6th, 2009 at 12:46 am
Awesome! It’ll be nice to see Skottie do this again, if he wants to.

@Karl – I’m still jealous that you get to spin around Europe and I get to fly to …Ohio. Not that Ohio is *bad* … it’s just not Europe lol. The guest strip is quite good, but it made me realize that I don’t think the strip should ever be done in color hehe.
@Dan – You actually *can* roast and eat acorns, it just isn’t popular. The tannins in the nuts give them a sharp taste that most don’t enjoy. There are several Native American dishes that involve acorns or acorn flour.

Wow, that is such a flashback to Watterson’s Sunday color strips, that I expect a T-rex to pop up from behind a tree and glare. I caught the nods in the squirrels’ names after a second read-thru. Very cool. Thanks for the intro to this site, as well as giving us an amazing little strip.

I like the way Charles looks in that first panel, you can just about hear him humming something silly as he lumbers along, lol.
November 6th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Personally, my wife and I always wanted to breed a cross between the bulldog and the shih tzu. Do the math.
Very nice comic today, I agree the color is nice on this one, but I like it black and white normally.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
God, look at how smug the fat one is.
It’s like, you want to pet him and smack the crap out of him at the same time, you know what I’m saying?
MARVELOUS work, Skottie.

Hey Karl. Hope you’re enjoying Belgium !
Thank you very much for the sketch of my Late Dog, Rocky.
It’s amazing and everyone who’ve seen it in the family so far think it’s really great. I can’t wait to find the right frame to put it on a wall.
Now after hearing you talk about the Abominables Charles Christopher book, I can’t wait for it to be ready to be shipped, to buy it, can we already make reservation ? ;)
Till you come back to Belgium, soon I hope, Get well and enjoy the rest of your european tour.

I love this series so much. I hope one day it gets published in a book along with the guest panels just so I may be able to have a copy at my disposal.
