Out of the Mouths of Babes and Ducklings
Thanks to everyone who came by to watch the live stream of this strip being drawn and coloured! I’ll try to figure out a way to improve the image quality and add audio so we can do questions & answers next time. Because I’ve got a LOT of questions…
I’m using UStream to broadcast. Follow me on twitter to find out when they’re starting!

December 9th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Hahaha! That’s BAD when you pass out from your own smell! Great work as usual!
December 9th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Amazing work. Love to see you working LIVE. Thanks so much for sharing your process and the magic of creating this strips with us. I hope next time I can really ask some questions :)
December 9th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
Man, you color quick.
December 9th, 2009 at 12:53 pm

December 9th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Those are some blunt ducklings.
December 9th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
oooh! baby ducksm and polite ones too. i wonder where this story’s going?
AND ACC’s eyes in panel 7 are classic.
December 9th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
hehe! made me giggle!
December 9th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
The ducklings are so adorable! :) Lol…he passes out from his own stink.
December 9th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
Good one, but… Is the story going anywhere anytime soon?
December 9th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Ohh Charles really needs to take a bath…
Those duckies are incredibly cute! *love*
December 9th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Awesome ducklings! I cant help but hope they follow him in a row for at least one scene. Hope he didnt land on mom.
Ry, your in no position to rush the guy! :p The man’s an artist, he’ll tell his story at his own pace. Too much TV, thats your problem. Too much TV and Sweets have consistantly granted instant gratification over the years, conditioning you to be a greedy impatient little erbert! GRR!
(Still loving the comic. Story and art, bloomin marvelous.)
December 9th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
amazing ducklings! i agree with jonboy- i hope we get to see them all lined up in at least one panel. :)
December 9th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Awwww cute duckies!
It took me a minute to figure out that CC passed out from his own reek, but LOL! On the good side, he’ll probably get to bathe in peace since everyone else at the bathing hole will no doubt flee. XD
December 9th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
@ry – Patience, grasshopper. Enjoy the ride. :)
December 9th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
The ducklings – “tres mangnifique” . The one thought that no-one has mentioned – Charles goes under – with the moon shine in the background . It appears he does not surface until daylight . What breath retention !! I’m happy just to see him – I’ll wait for the progression – one week at a time . That way we get to see all the little additions to the story arc that make the whole that much more complete .
December 9th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Hehe, the combination of the shtank Sis’s employee put on him and his own armpit was entirely too much for the old boy. He’d better find something a little less gross to roll in. Right now, the mystical Lion wouldn’t even approach him closely.
December 9th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Ry.. right now, this_is_the storyline. :)
December 9th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Ry, this is a bit like Seinfeld—a comic about nothing. You should have figured that out by the 40th strip or so. ;) And that’s what makes this comic so great!
December 9th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
@as363
He passes out, but on solid ground still. Hence the WHUMP noise. He’s still on land at the edge of the pond. No drowning or magical breath holding. ;)
December 9th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
They’re soooooo cuuuute!!! I absolutely love this strip. It made me laugh, what a lovely end to finals, thanks, Karl!
As for you, Ry, CC is not a comic you can rush. Each strip should be savored slowly to take in all of Karl’s magnificent work! I feel if it goes any faster it’s charm may lost. Besides, the waiting is half the fun for me! I always look forward to Wednesdays to see what new and exciting adventures Charles gets himself into. ^^
December 9th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
I love it. I just love it. Who hasn’t sniffed their armpit and thought “Dang! Did I forget deoderant again?” But to physically PASS OUT from the stench…well, that makes for some funny visuals :)
December 9th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
the look on his face in panel three CLASSIC “what IS that stink?!” he looks all suspicious like sisi’s employee was to blame for his stinkypits too!
then to wake up all confused about the stench… LOL… baby ducks – like little kids – all truth all the time!
December 9th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
I actually made a “NEEEEEE” sound on that last panel.
December 9th, 2009 at 11:58 pm
Ok I love this comic, LOVE. But it wasnt all the cute stuff that caught me. It was the great story line. I caught up with comic about Feb this year. I had a lot of questions and still do. So caaaalm down about the little comment. Mostly jonboy…
December 10th, 2009 at 12:26 am
Charles has to watch out. Ducklings might be cute but when they grow up they become quite the evil bastards.
And the honking… the honking the honking the honking!
December 10th, 2009 at 5:57 am
What an adorable band of ducklings! Are they the new fox family?
December 10th, 2009 at 8:01 am
HIs facial expression in the third panel is priceless.
December 10th, 2009 at 10:40 am
If I ever pass out, then wake up to 3 ducklings staring me down (especially if they start talking to me… more especially if they’re degrading me…), that’s when I’ll know that I have definitely reached the lowest point in my life. =) Fantastic artwork as usual. Keep up the good work!
December 10th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
I am now stuck pondering how he will get clean…
December 11th, 2009 at 9:54 am
It’s my hope that he finds a very powerful waterfall soon so that he can at least rinse off. Or if he can find some ashes somewhere … washing with ashes may be the answer, since ashes and soft water create a caustic solution that, when it hits oils and grease, chemically becomes soap. I just don’t see the skunks selling deodorant soap for some reason.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:07 am
there was this plot once…
December 11th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
How long til that skunk funk wears off?
Odd fact. I like the smell. Yeah, I know, but it just doesn’t gross me out.
December 11th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
I kind of like skunk musk too… in moderation.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
was cool to see you working on this strip
turned out great!
cheers
joe

I think many fans are far too apologetic of how glacial the narrative pace has become. If the strip had started out as anecdotes of forest creatures in Seinfeldian squabbles, then yes, this would not be alarming. But it began with an epic sweep, backstories, etc. It’s actually praise, I think, to hold an online comic to the same standards we do other media, rather than scrambling to suppress criticism.

@ds204
However, there is nothing to be done about it except wait and see. Karl generally gets to where he’s going. Yowling about it doesn’t speed him up to any appreciable degree. He’s coming along like a herd of turtles, slow but sure. I wanna know where the story goes, too, but I’ll just have to wait, and in the mean time enjoy the hilarity in-between. Once-a-week updates just make it SEEM longer. If you go back and do the archives all at once, it’s not bad pacing at all. Plus, such great artwork cannot be rushed. I’ll take the wait for the great results.
December 12th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
I’m not asking for anything to be rushed, just for the comic to hold itself up to its own standards. Indeed, there is nothing to be done, but that does not exonerate weakened storytelling. I’m certainly not ‘yowling,’ just offering feedback–something art is not only entitled to but needs. I’m certainly checking less frequently, as I’m guessing many are, and the strip seems to be reorienting itself more towards cute facial expressions and comic business. That’s fine, but that’s not what got me interested in the strip. It’s entirely the right of the artist to change the story however he wants, and it’s entirely my right to voice subjective disappointment. In the meantime, more stink lines.
December 12th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
Dang, you put it better then I did. But that was what I was trying to say. Well put.
December 13th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
If Townsen was around he’d keep CC on track.
December 14th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Ah little kids…can’t stand them. lol
December 15th, 2009 at 10:05 am
Discovered this today! Read and re-read the entire series…this is the best work I’ve read in ages and ages…definitely a new favorite. Wonderful, gorgeous work!
December 29th, 2009 at 4:37 am
Kids can be so cruel. ^^

Seconded.
