That should close neatly _above_ their head… The only danger would be a heart attack for all but the fastest birds. Still, I wouldn’t try it.
June 16th, 2010 at 9:48 am
seeds’ll probably do it! oh wait… i see. yikes
June 16th, 2010 at 10:05 am
No birdies NO! Fly away before one of your fat buddies sets that off.
June 16th, 2010 at 10:24 am
Noooo! Fly quickly my little friends. I am now filled with dread.
June 16th, 2010 at 10:31 am
Holy sh*#! I didn’t even notice that until I read the comments.
I was all like “Sense of foreboding? Weird…”
I think the comic had more of an affect because of that xD
Excellent as usual!
June 16th, 2010 at 10:39 am
I was confused until two seconds ago.
Now I’m all D:
June 16th, 2010 at 10:50 am
damn. that’s not great.
June 16th, 2010 at 10:52 am
I hope none of those birdies is friends with a turkey….
June 16th, 2010 at 11:23 am
If one of them jumps to fly, he will be right THERE when jumps energy makes it to snatch! Better to wait one more bird to sit! D:
June 16th, 2010 at 11:34 am
I was all “Well, what the …” until I got to the last panel, and then I was all “OH MY GAD!” when I nearly had a heart attack. Way to be, Karl. I think I need to lie down now. D:
June 16th, 2010 at 11:52 am
Well, birds are notoriously flighty
June 16th, 2010 at 11:53 am
My guess: the birdies set it off safely just before an animal, or Charles, would have stepped in it.
June 16th, 2010 at 12:27 pm
Talk about a sense of foreboding and foreshadowing…
This comic has been making ME anxious lately. Between the Syssi fuss, the bad bunny romance, Charles’ flashback and the king who’s gone off his rocker, I’m a little concerned about the forest. On the plus side, maybe the stress will drive people to see the theater group so that they can break even.
BTW, got my book the other day and it’s wonderful! Thanks Carl!
June 16th, 2010 at 12:32 pm
Sorry but… OH SNAP!
June 16th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
Oh no! Poor chickadees! This strip is really quite unsettling… it makes me worry… I think Charles needs to find that hunter and take his rage out on him…
June 16th, 2010 at 12:53 pm
Talk about having a front-row seat for all the action…..
June 16th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
LOL! Gotta love the dark humor in this strip. Great job as always!
June 16th, 2010 at 1:31 pm
I sent your first Charles comic to someone today and realized – you’ve been doing this for 3 years?! And I’ve been following it for 3 years?! holy moley. Congratulations Karl! Thank you so much for helping me get through my office job every Wednesday.
June 16th, 2010 at 2:08 pm
I had to look carefully at the third frame, and then I thought, “Oh…I hope Charles doesn’t come blundering by”.
D: indeed.
June 16th, 2010 at 2:09 pm
Karl – Canada Post cooperated and my book came today – Only one word -SUPER . Many many thanks for the issue – and put together so nicely .
June 16th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
very clever! i love the lightness of the characters balanced with the grim foreshadowings…
June 16th, 2010 at 2:38 pm
I read it and was like ok, The End. Then I reread it when when I saw the trap, my heart literally jumped. It somehow blended in with its surroundings the first time I read it, which is what its supposed to do. Awesome job!
June 16th, 2010 at 3:39 pm
Cool video of the sketch for the books. I don’t want to be a jerk, but I hope those markers are archival ink – a few of my sketchbooks have sections that were ruined by Sharpies leaching onto nearby pages over the years.
June 16th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
ok, so.
i just started reading this and i have to say its outrageously good.
alot of comics online use too many colors to, i guess, lessen the amount of care and work they put into their panels, but i love yours.
right balance of black & white, wonderful dialogue, really funny and sweet. can’t wait to read it all! :]
June 16th, 2010 at 5:11 pm
Woah, it took me some time to figure out what the strip was about so when I saw the trap my reaction was pretty loud… :p
June 16th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
OH NO! Is Charles anywhere near?
June 16th, 2010 at 6:34 pm
Whoa… D:
I’m hoping that one of their chubby friends joins them, so that they set the trap off before something else steps in it. XD And hopefully it’ll be over so quick that they won’t get a chance to have a heart attack…
Nice work Karl, with the subtle zooming out. ^___^
June 16th, 2010 at 6:43 pm
There must be a perception filter on this comic, I didn’t even notice until I started reading the comments and started wondering what everyone was so panicked about!
They’ll be fine. They weigh all of what? 200gms?
June 16th, 2010 at 7:19 pm
meh, the trap snaps – they’re unharmed….
chickadees are my favourite birdies. look like little thieves with their little masks…. :)
June 16th, 2010 at 8:24 pm
That is some excellent presenatation and subetly. Well done, you truely are a master.
June 16th, 2010 at 9:08 pm
I worry that bird #1 really did have too many seeds last night
June 16th, 2010 at 9:52 pm
Pray notice the “tremor” lines above the trap-teeth, in the third panel.
June 16th, 2010 at 11:21 pm
Oh crikey. I did a double take and shuddered when I saw it. Took me a second..
June 17th, 2010 at 12:04 am
Got the book today. Loved the 22 stamps on the shipping materials! :)
June 17th, 2010 at 12:19 am
ohshi-
June 17th, 2010 at 12:27 am
oh my!
i didn’t realize where they were sitting until i got to the third panel.
well drawn!
June 17th, 2010 at 2:47 am
*GASP* At first I didn’t get it, so I re-read it (twice) and then I almost fainted!!!
I think I’m going to CRY.
June 17th, 2010 at 4:00 am
no B3. not yet, you didnt…
June 17th, 2010 at 5:14 am
Perfect example of why I think traps of that sort should be outlawed forever. Far too easy to harm something you didn’t want harmed. I hope the chickadees set it off before some 4-leg does!
June 17th, 2010 at 8:29 am
I too had to read it twice! Love it!
June 17th, 2010 at 8:39 am
A masterful bit of imagery and possible foreshadowing. I can’t wait to see where we go next.
And for those who blithely assume that nothing bad could ever happen to cute little animals in this strip, I have one word for you: Townsen.
June 17th, 2010 at 9:26 am
Only Karl could come up with something that integrates nutty birds with serious hunting.
I’m not that worried; if the chickadees stay where they are when the trap sets off, it’ll miss their heads and wings because they’re really tiny.
Then again, this is Abominable Charles Christopher. Chickadees beware!
June 17th, 2010 at 9:27 am
Love your work! Brilliant.
June 17th, 2010 at 9:58 am
Hey, @sween sent me here, and I have to say I loooove your work! Started reading yesterdayevening, and today I read the last 5 strips.
It’s wonderful!
Birdies, fly!
June 17th, 2010 at 10:04 am
I love your art, and wish I could see it bigger. Maybe my eyes are going, but I know all your details would show up better in a bigger format…
June 17th, 2010 at 1:45 pm
A grim, silent warning of the potential for danger everywhere in Charles’ forest…Very effective.
June 17th, 2010 at 4:29 pm
Bring me back.
June 17th, 2010 at 9:24 pm
I just discovered your incredible webcomic today – and while I haven’t read through all of the archives yet, imagine my surprise at finding a pacifier on the road about an hour after starting…
June 18th, 2010 at 4:13 am
So is THAT a chickadee? I always assumed they were larger birds, around the size of a bowerbird. Those look tiny, like sparrows….
June 18th, 2010 at 8:53 am
At first I thought the feeling of dread was the third chickadee hanging out with them like, “Oh dang, Bob is back…” but then I saw the trap and I was like, “NOOO!!!” Like I felt my heart skip a beat. This comic friggen rocks.
June 18th, 2010 at 12:48 pm
Baxtrr… did you really have to bring up Townsen? *sniff*
Hehe, we call chickadees ‘tits’ meaning ’something small’… the little nursery rhyme doesn’t work so well with that one.
June 18th, 2010 at 1:36 pm
Yeah, yeah. And they really shot Bambi’s mother too. We get it. What I didn’t get until perusing my lovely new charles book is that the traps are really a character too. I’m almost imagining a whispery voice from them a la “LOTR” movies.
June 18th, 2010 at 5:41 pm
The comic didn’t load correctly when I read it… it actually cut off the bottom 1/4 of the comic. So I had to reload it before I figured out what happened.
I hope they’re ok.
June 21st, 2010 at 6:18 am
I read the strip on Thursday’s morning just after waking up from a horrible dream, hoping that I’ll found some good advice here. So, I’ll try to reduce the w/seeds for next time…
June 21st, 2010 at 9:40 am
…truley awesome artwork… great storyline… you are one gifted individual Karl… keep up the good work my friend… let’s hope that those little fellas make it… damn traps!…
June 21st, 2010 at 9:45 am
…sorry to double post… just to let you know Karl… you are starting to get quite a big following here in Sydney, Australia… I’ve put a lot of friends onto this website… none have been disappointed in it yet… as with me… they love your work…
June 21st, 2010 at 8:16 pm
Bring me bacl
June 22nd, 2010 at 12:36 am
AHH NO!! I got referred here a few days ago by Jason Sweeney’s twitter, and read through all the archives, and I didn’t realize I was all the way to the present!! It’s gonna kill me, having to wait a week to see the next installment instead of just flipping right through them ><
June 22nd, 2010 at 10:07 pm
LOL OH GOD, the birdies!
June 23rd, 2010 at 10:37 am
yeah, what Laura said!! great stuff, terrible for my patience…
(oh, and nice footer, now that I’m down here…)
June 23rd, 2010 at 10:02 pm
D:
June 28th, 2010 at 10:17 pm
Oh haha. I didn’t realize ’till reading the comments. Get outta there birdies!
