This strip was originally supposed to be part of last week’s episode, but I couldn’t make it work at the time. I’m much happier with it on its own.
And I coloured this one live on UStream! If you follow my Twitter feed, I frequently announce spontaneous live-drawing sessions, so come by and watch and chat.

Oh man! I’d really love to see the live-drawing but I suppose I missed it. Anyway to get a recording?

Any way…heh.

Better late that never Chuck!

awesome comic. I’m loving the story. I just started reading a week ago after hearing about it at Comic Book Resources.
June 23rd, 2010 at 9:57 pm
Would it be weird if I said that was a beautiful strip? =P
June 23rd, 2010 at 10:07 pm
XD GYAAAH, those poor birds! I dunno what’s worse, the trap or Charles who thinks he’s coming to rescue the day!
^_^ Well, thanks for the effort anyways, Charles.
June 23rd, 2010 at 10:11 pm
Charles really has a thing for bear traps, doesn’t he?
June 23rd, 2010 at 10:33 pm
YESSS. GET ‘EM CHARLES!
June 23rd, 2010 at 10:58 pm
Glad to see the chickadees got away save . Yes – Charles does have a thing for traps – can’t say that I blame him – nasty things .
June 23rd, 2010 at 10:59 pm
That should read “safe” = my bad – missed it .
June 23rd, 2010 at 11:15 pm
Golly gee, this comic is effing gorgeous. I just started reading a week ago and I have to say I am completely inspired. Your art is amazing!
June 23rd, 2010 at 11:22 pm
I think that last week’s comic stood much better on its own that it would have if you had put last week’s and this week’s together. It brought a sense of foreboding that you are the master of
Oh, and…LET ‘EM HAVE IT, CHARLES!!!
June 23rd, 2010 at 11:25 pm
I thought last week’s strip worked perfectly on its own. No need for a follow-up. (Then again, no need NOT to follow up!)

Charles SMASH!
June 24th, 2010 at 1:16 am
I think that when we read the first balloon, everyone went: nooooooooo!
June 24th, 2010 at 9:47 am
hmmm don’t want to be a kill joy but I think the last strip worked better on it’s own. This one just seems an ode to the obvious imho.

You get the impression that the birds were a little bit shaken up by the trap closing, but a LOT shaken up by the subsequent pummeling. Who protects us from our protector? Five will get you ten that at some point in the next few weeks or months we’ll overhear the chickadees gossiping about what a dangerous lout Charles is, with the trap almost or completely forgotten.
June 24th, 2010 at 10:39 am
I knew one of their fat friends was going to set it off. Good thing all the birdies are short.
June 24th, 2010 at 10:41 am
As I said last week, the traps are really a character themselves in the strip. And apparently the sworn enemy of Charles. Even the suggestion of a trap made him attack the Lion spirit who was just warning him of the dangers.
I can’t help but wonder what will happen when Charles comes directly in contact with the city and humans. So far it’s been oblique such as the traps and the unseen hunter who saw Charles but didn’t shoot. I suspect a twist coming on like his long lost family are trappers or they manufacture the steel traps. If his father is the king as some have suggested, is he going to be decked out in a fox cape?

I’m so glad they are all safe…
June 24th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
Well, finished going through all the archives yesterday. Amazing comic! Some of the best comic art I’ve seen. The story line had me hooked fast (so very sad about the foxes).
As others have said, this comic and last weeks work very well as separate units. Can hardly wait till the next installment. Thanks Karl!
June 24th, 2010 at 1:33 pm
Oh … I also find it very interesting to know that it only takes 4 Chickadees to trigger a bear trap.
June 24th, 2010 at 1:54 pm
Thank goodness the chickadees are so short.
June 24th, 2010 at 3:20 pm
Ooof, this was close. I really thought it would end more tragically or that we would never know what happened so we would all think the worst !!
June 24th, 2010 at 5:25 pm
The sketch in my book was great. Thanks man.
I liked all those stamps too
June 24th, 2010 at 5:45 pm
Boy are those some hefty chickadees.
Damn, Charles, chill out a bit!
June 24th, 2010 at 6:02 pm
hey Karl, that last frame would make an awesome tshirt… just sayin…
June 24th, 2010 at 6:27 pm
Ummmm… I think those are sparrows, not chickadees. A tiny bit heftier – especially Brian
June 24th, 2010 at 8:54 pm
That’ll wake ‘em up before they go-go…
June 24th, 2010 at 9:02 pm
Bring the rain, Charles!! Rain down the blows!
June 24th, 2010 at 10:19 pm
Bring me back
June 25th, 2010 at 12:24 pm
Wow, I think it’s dead, Charles…
…but still. If I’d nearly gotten chunk3d by a bear trap, Charles is the one I’d want to have on my side.
June 25th, 2010 at 1:39 pm
Yay, the chickadees are safe! And yes, those are chickadees. Sparrows don’t have those specific markings. Their my state bird ^^ Maybe it’s just a super sensitive trap O.o There were dead ermines/weasels earlier on. Maybe four chickadees = 1 ermine/weasel?
June 25th, 2010 at 7:23 pm
Yes!!!!
June 28th, 2010 at 10:39 am
Zombie Townsen wouldn’t be cute.
June 28th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
