The Wall
Surprise! I’m actually out of the country right now on a super-secret research trip.
Or maybe it’s not so secret any more. Anyway, as you can see, things are about to change drastically for Charles.
Stay. Tuned.

Charles is gonna kick some arse
Fully addicted to this strip Karl. But its a healthy kind of addiction. I think…
Thanks
July 7th, 2010 at 8:41 am
any more info on the books? hopefully ya finished before your super secret trip..
July 7th, 2010 at 8:44 am
a walled city? québec city?
July 7th, 2010 at 8:44 am
whoa
July 7th, 2010 at 8:49 am
Did they “put up a fence to keep me out, or to keep Mother Nature in?”
July 7th, 2010 at 9:02 am
something there is that doesn’t love a wall, that sends the rolling groundswell under it . . . (R. Frost)
July 7th, 2010 at 9:03 am
I think we’re not in Kansas anymore…
July 7th, 2010 at 9:11 am
awesome!!! I love the look of the city.
July 7th, 2010 at 9:16 am
Beautiful panel, as usual, and which seems to announce something dark is coming… Love it !
July 7th, 2010 at 9:54 am
Can hardly wait to see how Charles reacts to the city… and how the city reacts to Charles! I have a feeling that neither one will enjoy this meeting…. good stuff, Karl.
July 7th, 2010 at 10:36 am
Now I’m seeing the trap as a melee weapon.
July 7th, 2010 at 10:38 am
Say no more, Karl. Say. No. More.
July 7th, 2010 at 12:08 pm
Hue?
July 7th, 2010 at 12:21 pm
Be careful Charles! O: The city will not react kindly!
July 7th, 2010 at 12:28 pm
Holy smokes! He’s at the city now?! How’s he gonna get in, though…?
July 7th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
The phrase “stranger in a strange land” comes to mind…
Oh, be careful Charles…
July 7th, 2010 at 12:45 pm
I’m getting a “Walls of Jericho” kind of vibe from this.
Seriously, what is this? Medieval town? No city within the last what, a thousand years hasn’t had an outer ring of farms or suburbs.
July 7th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
wow. Astounding image. There is something frightening and beautiful about the image of Charles standing before the city walls. I must confess not feeling quite the same thing as others: Charles kicking butt and all … I am worried for our protagonist. He seems so small before that city, like a bunny before a bulldozer…
July 7th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
dont go in there Chuck! nothing good will come of it!
July 7th, 2010 at 1:23 pm
Things are about to get rough.
July 7th, 2010 at 2:54 pm
Wait–this better not be the same wall keeping the smoke monster out.
Seriously, though, loving it! Amazing as usual.
July 7th, 2010 at 3:18 pm
At least he had the (Dream/Vision) about where not to try and enter . Trying to go though a water outlet that is producing hot water would not be a good thing .
July 7th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
the anticipation is killing me! i sense some danger coming…
July 7th, 2010 at 3:56 pm
It just got real!
July 7th, 2010 at 5:48 pm
Why am I reminded of the Epic of Gilgamesh by this?
July 7th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
I keep thinking on that memory he had in the syrup forest about the hot faucet. I have my theories.
July 7th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
FINALLY
July 7th, 2010 at 8:44 pm
Odds on Charles being captured?
Odds on Charles causing some damage, escaping the city, and being pursued by hunters?
Or maybe he’ll just looks around a bit. I doubt it, though.
I have a bad feeling about this.
July 7th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
he’s still carrying the TRAP!
this is exciting!
i wonder what the smoke’s coming from…
July 7th, 2010 at 10:46 pm
Oh wow, this is super exciting! What an amazing moment.
July 8th, 2010 at 1:06 am
I found your comic today and I’m completely addicted.
Charles is gonna kick some butt.
I wonder if I’m the only one kinda wanting to find out how the king looks?
July 8th, 2010 at 4:23 am
Don’t worry what the King looks like. Charles will kill him and revert to his true form when the spell breaks.
July 8th, 2010 at 7:13 am
THE TIME HAS COME.
July 8th, 2010 at 8:50 am
@Speculator — why wouldn’t you think this is his true form? he seems like something emergent from both the wild and the conscious…
July 8th, 2010 at 10:04 am
I’m interested to see how human society will react to Charles.
July 8th, 2010 at 10:47 am
God-Damn-thrillin’!!!
July 8th, 2010 at 3:12 pm
Wait, you’re going to SDCC? Aw man, I didn’t think that you came that far South! Now if only you’d come to DragonCon one of these years.
July 8th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
Yeah melee weapon, or zelda-style key. “Put this little cube in the center of the big octagonal hole” sort of unexpected. And of course he’s already at the city, it wasn’t that far away from the mountaintop when he first was sent on his quest and from the looks of it the forest was in the center of the other two destinations; since the mountaintop he’s been working his way to the city. Looking at the archive it’s interesting in a perfectly innocent way to try to do a sort of literary author psychoanalysis; lots of text-heavy fun comics, followed by a lot of moodier, darker comics.
July 8th, 2010 at 4:34 pm
Wow, what a powerful panel.
July 9th, 2010 at 7:51 pm
I’m interested to see how Karl draws humans…
July 11th, 2010 at 10:21 pm
Awesome stuff.
Here’s an idea:
CC tries to climb the wall, but naturally fails since its too smooth, and the guards laugh.
CC then rips the trap in half, and uses the halves of the trap as climbing gear, and the guards freak out…..
July 12th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
I got the Abominable book today and I absolutely LOVE the quality. Thanks for taking the time on every sketch. . mine was a deer and I wish I could frame it. Thanks again
July 15th, 2010 at 10:15 am
@ACM
Sorry for the delay. I suppose I’m just a romantic at heart.
