Moo Again
Hi, everyone! I’m back from San Diego and hustling to fulfill book orders again. Thankfully, my travels are over until September, at least.
Comic-Con was fun, but it would have been nice to have a table there, if only to meet those of you who attended. I ran into some readers on the show floor, purely by happenstance, but I hope to have more of a presence there next year. Until then, you’ll definitely be able to find me at the New York show in October!

hahaha i was as confused as Chuck was for a second there
July 28th, 2010 at 7:52 pm
Great – agree with James on the confused . The look on Charles’ face in the second-last panel – Priceless .
July 28th, 2010 at 7:53 pm
Love it! Smart-alecky dogs are great
July 28th, 2010 at 8:26 pm
just found this today… and went back and read the WHOLE SERIES nonstop. i feel like such a glutton. such beautiful work – i want everyone i know to read your story.
July 28th, 2010 at 8:32 pm
NYCC?!
awesome I will be there and buy everything you have!!!
July 28th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
XD I think I made the same expression as C.C.
:3 I already like this dog. A LOT.
July 28th, 2010 at 9:17 pm
I too love the dog. That view of him in the 5th panel reminds me so much of two of our family terriers. Also – I received my book and it is absolutely lovely. Just amazing work Karl. I mentioned a while back in the comments that I was hoping that by random chance the book sketch I would include a bee – and not only did I end up with a bee, I had TWO! I actually let out a “Squeeee!” sound when I saw it!
July 28th, 2010 at 9:19 pm
ROTFL! *with tears*
i still had to go back and make sure there wasn’t something sinister going on with those cows though.
July 28th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
I hope to see ya in NYCC! I like the dog. I better he has an old, country man’s voice.
July 28th, 2010 at 10:13 pm
Rofl!! “Moo”, my butt!
July 28th, 2010 at 10:13 pm
Oh wow, I was worried for a second. XD
July 28th, 2010 at 10:32 pm
*phew* I was really worried that every animal in the city was gonna be some sort of mindless zombie from being cut off from nature or something. But apparently not. Thank goodness for this dog.
HE BETTER NOT DIE TRAGICALLY.
July 29th, 2010 at 1:29 am
A classic setup line, that. I approve.
July 29th, 2010 at 3:41 am
Hahaha !! Excellent !! I think I felt exactly like CC for a second.
July 29th, 2010 at 4:32 am
The Happenstance, was it Crazy Random?
July 29th, 2010 at 5:33 am
I like this dog already.
July 29th, 2010 at 6:40 am
Yes, yes, I also love this colorful wire-haired mentor-figure.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:14 am
I like that dog. He has a sense of humour!
July 29th, 2010 at 10:33 am
That was great, old goggie with a sense of humor!
July 29th, 2010 at 10:45 am
I just received my book and IT IS BEAUTIFUL.
Thank you, thank you so much. The sketch (of the fish) is incredible too. This is how all graphic novels/comic collections should be.
But I realised…it means I have to got through the death of poor little Townsen ALL OVER AGAIN
Not to sound impatient but when can we expect Vol.2? You better say right now or I’ll be very, very upset.
July 29th, 2010 at 11:04 am
Ahh….a new companion. Lets see how this grizzled mutt fares.
July 29th, 2010 at 11:17 am
Something tells me the dog’s going to get in trouble. Isn’t his job to keep big, unknown, hairy creatures away from the heard, rather than greet them placidly?
July 29th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
I am dying for Charles to meet those castle cats but I think the idea of a wise sheep dog as a guide is better. I bet he warns him off of going in the city.
July 29th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
I was looking forward to meet you there! sadly, we never met. Beautiful work you’ve done. With a little luck, I”ll be able to attend NY Con. Meanwhile, I’ll settle with one of your master editions. Kudos.
July 29th, 2010 at 1:58 pm
I would suggest again coming to Dragoncon down in Atlanta. It’s like Comiccon but more fun.
Seriously, less waiting in line and fewer studios shilling the fall cr@pfest.
July 29th, 2010 at 3:35 pm
Yeah, that’s one laid-back mutt there. I’ve known several like him.
Anyone else notice that Charles seemed larger as compared to the cows now? Maybe it was just the angle…
July 29th, 2010 at 4:08 pm
Love the dog!!!
July 29th, 2010 at 4:48 pm
The dog’s voice in my head is definitely Bud Luckey!
July 29th, 2010 at 11:13 pm
Not to sound impatient, but… Okay, okay. I’m impatient. What’s the status on the Master’s Editions — how far along in the stack are you? I want to know when to start panicking, you see.
July 30th, 2010 at 12:26 am
^ I’m also slightly curious as to where you are too. I really love and appreciate all of the love you’re putting into these sketches so I can totally wait as long as needed (but I’m super curious) Hope they are going well, and hope your wrist isn’t dying of carpal tunnel! Thanks Karl you’re great!!!
July 30th, 2010 at 5:30 am
HAH!
July 30th, 2010 at 11:50 am
I was wondering how Charles would learn about and “blend in” to the human world beyond the walls. What better coach than a dog! The perfect bridge between man and beast!
July 30th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
Tiens! Un chien bilingue!
Hey! A bilingual dog!
July 30th, 2010 at 12:41 pm
Is it just me or does that dog remind anyone of Sam Elliot? I can almost hear his voice coming from that face.
July 30th, 2010 at 2:31 pm
Cool! Now I’ve got to teach my dog to say “moo”!
July 30th, 2010 at 9:22 pm
LOL awesome
July 31st, 2010 at 7:41 am
Karl: I have noticed that this comic has never been translated into Italian. I am Italian, I’m a translator, and I’d be glad to provide a translated version of this comic in my own language.

@Lun Si, si! Io voglio vedere Il Abominabile Carlo-Cristoforo!
July 31st, 2010 at 12:29 pm
@Aen Oh cielo, “Il abominabile Carlo-Cristoforo”. Ma รจ geniale! XD
July 31st, 2010 at 2:23 pm
Okay, I instantly love that dog.
And since you have established a history of doing this to me…
please don’t kill him.
July 31st, 2010 at 6:29 pm
Love your work, as an artist myself i can see the talent you put into your work and id just like to say well fing done. My favorite color set up is grey scale and your comic is perfect to a fault with it. Anyways love it and just wanted to say you rock.
July 31st, 2010 at 8:29 pm
A new friend for Charles! It’s amazing how in the pace of three panels you can startle us, make us do a double-take, and then make us feel foolish but relieved!
August 1st, 2010 at 8:34 am
Damn! I reached the present day. Read through your whole archives on the recommendation of ‘Calamities of Nature’. Your drawing style is awesome, I love the limited palette.
Bookmarked and looking forward to the next installment.

@Ron: heaven forbid!

Talking doggie! Yay!
August 2nd, 2010 at 8:14 pm
Mr. Kerschl, Thanks for the awesome story thus far. I did some fan art using your work for reference. I hope you enjoy it.

Bravest dog ever.
August 4th, 2010 at 12:57 pm
The dog talking makes me want to believe that the cows are hiding something….
August 4th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
I just noticed that the dog has the same markings as the cows…nice touch!
August 4th, 2010 at 9:44 pm
haha That’s great.
August 5th, 2010 at 3:11 am
It’s pretty awesome. Oh you crazy older personalities. In dog form.
August 10th, 2010 at 3:08 pm
reminds me of Kara
February 22nd, 2011 at 4:31 pm
Cutest and funniest 6th panel ever.
March 9th, 2011 at 9:21 pm
I found this site today (3/9/11). It feels like a random act of kindness. Thank you!
I’m moved to comment because this reminded me of the bird/bear trap comic in which the artist noted “I realized after I wrote this it would have been better if the birds all said, “quack quack quack”. Are these cow sthe fulfillment of that? Or will this go deeper? I’ve got to think that the artist has dialog in these cows’ head that we need to divine.
If only I still had my Orwellian Oiuga-Board.

Well, you’ve got the cow curiosity thing down pretty good.
Want to attract a herd of cows? Go lay down in a cow pasture, pretty soon you will be surrounded as they come to check out what is laying there to see if it’s a threat. They ain’t quite as dumb as they look. Just make sure there isn’t a bull out there, depending on the breed, he won’t necessarily bother seeing if you are innocuous before taking action.
Then you have the average herd dog, knows his charges well. I can just see my Border Collie jerking someone’s chain like that.

Moo. Moo, I say!
