AkatsukiNekoJr: Right now I picture him as a 20-30 something but very feeble, perhaps even the same height as Charles. Not sure why…
On a side note…
Karl, what would we have to do to get you to start updating this daily? I just love the comic but it kills me knowing I’ll only get 52 glimpses into this world a year!!! Maybe Leap Years can count for something? Seriously though, I’m truly grateful that I stumbled upon this comic at the beginning of this year. Thank you so much for an amazing strip every Wednesday.
Sounds like Amal WANTS the king to go out there and get killed, haha. “Terribly scary, sire. Only a great king such as Your Great Highness could subdue such a terribly scary beast.”
Oh come on… who actually says “gruesome trophy”? I mean he thinks he’s a HERO this upstart king, right? A great and mighty warrior? Wouldn’t he think of his trophies as “glorious” then, as they reflect back on his own self-assumed awesomeness?
I agree with ironladyife, the king is a total pain in the @** and I bet the whole kingdom would be glad to be rid of him, however, I don’t think Charles is quite the monster to do him in.

Never been much of a plot freak (and ABCC has so much to offer anyway, I can hardly complain!), but I am so looking forward to:
- having this annoying/funny king/prince revealed (and something tells me his mother won’t be any less annoying/threatening…)
- watching Charles finally go on the quest the wood elementals set him on.
In any case, after the latest plot developments and the latest installment of Vivol’s and Moon Beam’s tale (also long missed), a funny animals interlude is badly needed…
… Karl… ?
I’ve given up trying to guess whats coming. I’m absolutely loving the slow reveal of the king though … I almost hope we never get to see him, like Nanny in Muppet Babies or something.
Thank you karl, seriously, this is my favourite thing in comics right now. I absolutely adore your colouring. It takes someone quite adept to make things look so glorious in just black and white. kudos.
i imagine the prince as a kiddy version of yosemite sam and marvin the martian cross. is that weird? when do we get to see him????
i feel like charles would be so confused by the offensive by the clumsy arogant prince that the encounter ends in comedy.
or not.
oh no.
I doubt we’ll ever see a human in this comic unless it’s a shadow. With that being said I feel like this world of ACC is a little anachronistic. The sophistication of the trap that CC is carrying opposed to the medieval nature of the kingdom/fiefdom he is visiting, as well as the circus that Vivol escaped from. Some elements don’t fit. Does anyone else agree?
Don’t get me wrong, I love this comic and know Karl will lead the story where it needs to go.
Hi all!
@Adriano: I’m kind of in need of a funny animal diversion too, but I don’t want to break up this scene. More soon, though!
@Craig K: The anachronisms are, for the most part, deliberate. I don’t think this world exists in any specific place or time. Some of it looks Babylonian and other bits are more modern, wherever it’s convenient to express a mood.
@Lyon: GRUUUUEEESSOOMMMMME!!
@Craig K – I agree, some things have definitely seemed out of place. Not so much the trap, but remember that one hunter with the rifle? It was a modern-looking bolt-action,as I recall, and those weren’t very common until the very late 1800′s.
@Karl – I do very much appreciate the comment on the deliberate anachronisms. I’ve been driving myself to distraction trying to figure a relative timeline and location for all this. Now it all makes perfect sense. Heh
Great strip. Just started reading it this week and have laughed with Charles and all the creatures of the wood the whole way. I feel quite attached to these characters even though it’s been a short period of time and I can’t wait for the next post. I’ll keep reading
i cant wait to see what will happen next. i wonder if we will SEE the king! because so far, weve heard the humans, but we havent actually seen any. i think it will be neat! all i can do is picture the king as a skinny spoiled man that basks in self-proclaimed “glory”.
i also wonder how charels will deal with him. i hope he dosent REALLY hurt him, that dosent sound like charels to me!
this comic keeps me on the edge of my seat each week!
I suppose its a post-fall out world, because of the past Russian circus that moon bear was in, the firearms, the traps and Charles’s dreams of being a young human child. Now it looks like civilization has booted itself up to a city or something, and that king is going to be like the ancient jerkwad Gilgamesh. There’s a good chance that this king is going to end up really liking charles for some arbitrary reason.
Adrianos comments on the quest from the elementals got me curious, since Karl seemed to sidestep that question. In my mind, the quest was about confronting human interference, so I also thought, he finally went back to his quest now.

Love the cats, I share my house with 5 of them! I suspect we have a spoiled little Prince for a king here . . . .
September 1st, 2010 at 5:29 pm
so i take it Chuck didnt take Three Legs’ advice
September 1st, 2010 at 5:39 pm
This just won’t end well. However, I have the feeling that the royal pain is the one who will suffer the consequences, not Charles.
(I hope)
September 1st, 2010 at 5:47 pm
Why do I keep expecting that this “Sire” is a little kid?
@Cesare: I second the spoiled little Prince idea.
September 1st, 2010 at 5:48 pm
Oh dear. He’s kingy’s gonna get smushed…
September 1st, 2010 at 5:52 pm
I hope Charles sets a bear trap on him D:
September 1st, 2010 at 6:24 pm
why do i think the battle dress… is in fact a dress???
September 1st, 2010 at 6:49 pm
“It’s all relative” makes me think it’s another cat. lol
September 1st, 2010 at 7:15 pm
@Adam – the tern “Battle Dress” is correct for the period – a non-sexual term . The rest – we’ll just have to wait and see .
September 1st, 2010 at 7:19 pm
Wouldn’t it just be a quirky twist of fate if the king was actually big and powerful?
Then again, it just wouldn’t be much of an adventure if he wasn’t.
September 1st, 2010 at 7:19 pm
I have an urge to call this prince a mama’s boy.
September 1st, 2010 at 7:25 pm
I love that he CALLS FOR HIS MOTHER. It reminds me of Sylvester the Cat’s son: “Mother! Get the thing! Father’s stuck again!”
September 1st, 2010 at 7:36 pm
it keeps us wondering, always! Love it!
September 1st, 2010 at 7:40 pm
I don’t know why….but…for some reason…I have a feel that the king is gonna be really young…meh could just me. anywas nice work

It’s a little on-the-nose is all I’m saying.
September 1st, 2010 at 9:02 pm
Whew. I dislike this ‘king’ more and more. Her sounds like a small kid who’s gone insane with power.
Chaaaaarles… *worries*
September 1st, 2010 at 9:05 pm
This makes me think of King Farquaad as a youth. I suppose that’s appropriate.

Is this what he was supposed to keep the feather for?
September 2nd, 2010 at 7:15 am
Prediction: The King and Charles will become best buds because they both have pacifiers. Yes!
September 2nd, 2010 at 8:07 am
dammit! September 8th cannot come fast enought!
September 2nd, 2010 at 8:22 am
I’m always racking my brain for potential plot twists, and as a result, I just have visions of the king being another abominable.

I just got my book! Thank you so much!
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:11 am
oh, and with reading the book and thinking back now, all I can say is go lion go =p
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:16 am
I enjoy the “How big?” “It’s all relative”…a reference to the seemingly sliding scale CC sometimes has?
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:19 am
@as363 oh i know. i’m just commenting on the king’s seemingly… ‘unique’ personality.
=P

I’d love a bigger drawing of that city, the style is awesome and I’d love to see more of it.
September 2nd, 2010 at 5:33 pm
“If you want a job done right, have an old woman do it.” or so my granny said anyway.
But in this case, might as well let the king do it!

… The king is kinda delightfully kooky. I like! But we shall see how things pan out before I form a definite opinion on him.

I thought you might appreciate this Karl

September 7th, 2010 at 4:59 pm
This is beginning to look suspiciously like the epic of Gilgamesh. Is Christopher to become Enkidu? Is that it? Oh, wait.
SPOILER ALERT
i spoil things
