I remember when I was in middle school I asked some of the adults ‘why do I need to learn geometry? I’m never gonna use it. Do YOU guys use it?’ and they just looked at each other and shrugged, then said ‘Nope. Geometry is dumb.’
I felt justified and hold this to be true to this very day and I’m a college grad.
fwiw, I wish I knew more geometry, it can be awfully helpful in deciphering maps amongst other useful things. I think it can be one of the more practical, non daily use, of mat out there.
@czernobog – Geometry doesn’t teach the fundamentals of logic in MY state! They took the proofs right out of the curriculum. You know, just in case someone might escape from our public school system educated. /headdesk
The expressions on this one are priceless. Made me literally LOL.
I’ve never seen anything as “bang your head against the wall until this sinks in” as how math is taught in America. I was lucky enough to learn math in a Montessori school before I was thrust into the vapid mediocrity that is public education here. Of course, that means I spent third through eighth grade repeating arithmetic and algebra I’d already learned in the Montessori system *bored sigh*

The father´s expression is perfect, just perfect.
August 24th, 2011 at 9:49 pm
Neither can I…

And strangely, 40 years of work following school seems to hold to the same pattern.

Children speak the truth… But school gets better !! …depending on what kind of student you will become.
August 25th, 2011 at 12:34 am
And the “nerdy” little bird is so *awww* :´) (hey, I kind of like math too… don’t worry)
August 25th, 2011 at 1:19 am
Geometry teaches the fundaments of logic.
And I hope I got the captcha text in the right box.

loved this back-to-school strip!
August 25th, 2011 at 8:16 am
Stopping to read this in a momentary lull in my battle with my daughters to get to school, I can only sigh quietly before returning to the fray.
August 25th, 2011 at 12:22 pm
Wow, I just had that conversation with my babies (10 and 12). They know how to call a spade a spade I can tell you…..
August 25th, 2011 at 12:27 pm
I’m an old school cabinetmaker and geometry has been very helpful in
laying out curved cabinets and positioning them in the rooms.
Everything needs to be measured and calculated to fit.
It turns out that math did come in handy after all.
ps. still hate balancing check books.
August 25th, 2011 at 1:45 pm
This is spot on! I love the expressions of the birds!
Blah, math…
August 25th, 2011 at 4:22 pm
hey little bird, math was my favourite subject in school too.
August 25th, 2011 at 4:24 pm
But how do they go to school if they can’t fly yet??
August 25th, 2011 at 10:18 pm
Aww, I liked math, and I didn’t mind getting up early.
Love these expressions though. %>
August 26th, 2011 at 11:22 am
I would totally buy a t-shirt with that little bird at the end saying I like math…
August 26th, 2011 at 3:58 pm
I love the look on the kids face in panel 2

yes
August 28th, 2011 at 2:05 pm
Now, how can you tell if you like math if you don’t learn it first?
(Liked math. Hated Algebra.)
August 28th, 2011 at 10:09 pm
I just got the Pink Floyd reference! Also sorry for the previous double post. Don’t know what happened.
August 30th, 2011 at 12:53 am
pfft! Math is easy. That I can do in my sleep. Now art, that’s hard! How do people do that stuff anyway? It’s like magic or something.
August 30th, 2011 at 1:00 am
Don’t diss math, it built the internet on which you’re reading this!
August 30th, 2011 at 1:04 pm
This discussion is familiar in my house. *runs away before wife yells at him*
August 30th, 2011 at 1:54 pm
I absolutely *love* math. And the more I learn about it, the more I hate how math was taught at school when I was there.
August 30th, 2011 at 8:38 pm
Love the little guy’s appropriately-humbled sideways glance in panel two. I know that look well.
August 30th, 2011 at 11:18 pm
Aww. That little birdie, bet he throws off the class curve and gets teased.
BTW, see you at Dragoncon! It’s like Comic-Con, but for nerds and freaks! You’ll love it.
August 30th, 2011 at 11:34 pm
@Kar – I’m not attending DragonCon. You probably got me confused with Karl Kesel, who IS attending.
Happens all the time.
August 31st, 2011 at 3:07 am
Sorry for the confusion, but you still need to make it down south one of these days. It’s like Comic Con but for nerds.
August 31st, 2011 at 9:18 am
I like math too… just not doing it.
September 6th, 2011 at 1:15 pm
I never hated school, but I’d never go back.
September 15th, 2011 at 5:34 pm
I loved it. Hilarious. And yup, that’s kind of school in a nut shell
Loved the name too
‘Cause that’s an awesome song

I hated math, haaaaated math all through grade school.
It turns out they were teaching it to me too slowly. I was horribly bored.
It got better in high school.
Algebra was much tastier.
I’m pretty sure both math and drawing were taught to me the wrong way.
