Insomniac
I didn’t sleep much last night. So on my way to the studio this morning, I was thinking:
I should do a strip today about an animal who can’t sleep. But what animal? I’d certainly like to be sleeping right now. But it’s the middle of the day. It’s bright and there are all sorts of noises that would keep me awake. People do it, though. People work night shifts and then sleep all day. I was one of those people when I was twenty, except for the work part. I was practically nocturnal. What about bats? Bats are nocturnal. And their hearing is amazing and supersonic. That would be terrible for sleeping. You’d super-hear everything. Okay, there’s today’s comic. I would like some coffee.
That was a brief behind-the-scenes look into how this comic is made. Then I sit down and draw it and colour it and hope it’s okay.
Speaking of COLOURING… big congrats to Cheyanne Tillery, who was the big winner of the Abominable Colouring Contest! Her piece was picked randomly by my son (I have a video which I’ll post later) and you can see her entry here. She gets a free book with a custom sketch of her choice. Thanks, Cheyanne, and everyone else who participated! I hope to do more of these in the future!

Well, for all of the sleep-deprived elements involved in this comic…it came out pretty funny!

I read your work here and its amazing! congratulation… I dont know if you already did it, but maybe you can post something of your work method.. I think it could be very usefull for everybody who want to make comic strips.
Or maybe I should search more… because probably you already said something about it somewhere.. anyway.. congratulations!

Fabulous Bat. He is so cute and grumpy.

I cooked at night when I was a teenager. It really blew. Especially since all my friends were out having fun. Then they would come in and I would have to cook for them. Insult to Injury

You’ve got that dead right. Seriously. I’m something of a “nighthawk” myself, and I also have the dubious honor of having a singing bird outside, somewhere within hearing range of my bed. Let me tell you, when I occasionally go to bed at 4 AM exactly when this bird starts singing in the utter, absolute, total silence outside, I can hardly stop thinking of staggeringly cruel ways of making it SHUT THE #$^$% UP. So yeah, definitely can relate.

I had to read the accompanying text because I could not for the life of me figure out what I was looking at in the last panel. I thought it was an overhead shot of something sitting up almost against a wall.

Whatever happened to the baby owl who went off with his crazy uncle? I keep waiting for that to be a story arc. Is it in the book?

Hahah, that would be me….

That is how I feel every morning at work.

“You’d super-hear everything.”
That’s funny!

That poor bat, didn’t notice his ears in his fingers at first. Bats don’t get enough love.

I’m a bartender so I work all night and sleep all day. Cept I can’t sleep today because there’s too much noise. I understand this comic.

Niiice…it remembers me of my own sleep, there are some donkeys outside my appartment, and every night they sing their really loud songs to keep away the foxes from the chicken. ^^

I immediately get this feeling for the bat being an insufferable grouchy animal complaining to the neighbours to keep it down because he ‘works’ (lives) at night. It reminds me of the fateher of an ex girlfriend of me. Poor ol’ frustrated bat!
By the way, if you want to see some more bats, I was here as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwYeqDyYNGQ (scroll it halfway)

Hahaha. I used to live in an old farm house, which had ancient windows that didn’t block noise at all. I used to get woken up this way every morning by the birds outside. On the one hand they do sound very pretty, but on the other it was like 6am, and I, too, am definitely the bat in this scenario…

Haha – love the “stream of (just-barely) consciousness” that led to the strip! :^)

This gives me an idea for a new childrens toy:
“The cow says ‘moo’!”
“The pig says ‘oink’!”
“The owl says ‘F*ck you all! I’m trying to sleep here!’”

I’ve finally caught up with the story! I’m not sure if I’m relieved that I’m no longer in danger of necro-posting, or dissapointed that I’ll now have to wait an entire WEEK for the next strip!!!
At any rate, This webcomic is amazing! Keep up the good work!

Nice musical notation Karl – My dad the ex-music teacher would be proud. I especially like the tortured, twisted notes in the bat panel.

What a wonderful comic, I found this comic by whim and I love it. I don’t know where to begin to say how awesome it is. I love the direction this comic is heading, and look foward with eager anticaption for more!

“FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF”
Poor bat.

Thank you so much for the book and sketch!! I love it!!

I have never identified more with a character in a comic than I do with this poor bat! I, too, am a bat in a world full of chirpy birds. I think you may have identified why so many bats sleep in deep caves.
