ohmanohmanohman. Definitely Pops Gilgamesh. that’s where my money is
I was so startled (in a good way) by the art though! What a fantastic contrast to your usual style, certainly gives it the ‘reminiscing’/story telling feel.
Oh, please let this be related to some existing story line. There are already to many to keep track of with out backtracking every week to catch up on the nuances.
@Shane: Huh? I would’ve thought there was only one storyline. The other characters are more one-day gags, with the continuity not really mattering. Well… I guess the skunks count as a storyline too, but I’m not sure I’d call “Papa bird’s drinking problem” or “the roach therapist” storylines.
I see where Gilgamesh gets his good looks mask now
At first I thought it might be Charles’s father. Then I thought it was Gilgamesh’s father when I saw Frank’s comment. I’m still inclined to believe it’s Charles’s father for some reason. Maybe shape of the figure?
Given the obviously human silhouette, and the fact that the speaker is apparently looking out of eyeholes in a mask, this is more likely gilgamesh’s father. See the sharp clean lines around the nose, the precise shape of the eyeholes (very similar to the eyeholes in most masks, intended to both represent the shape of the human eye while offering optimal sight lines, or at least as optimal as possible through a mask) and the smoothness of the cheeks and forehead. That and there’s nothing of Charles in the physique. Charles’ limbs are the thickness of tree trunks and his chest has the proportions of a bird’s, with the chest muscles to match. Not to mention, well, his feet. So unless this figure mated with an ox, it’s doubtful it’s Charles’ father.
His soldiers would surely not have willingly left their King to die alone, would they? So this character might NOT be a king, but I guess it is still possible.
Now the questions for me are: who are the host waging war against? Are our heroes about to find this person? Will they save his life? What caused his fever? What has he done that he needs forgiveness for?
On a separate note, I think there is something quite oriental about the art style here – the stylised (sp?) sun, the mountains, the winding host, the silkiness… but what do I know? I can’t even draw
So wait, if that’s Charles and Gilgimesh is his son, does that mean that the pacifer’s Gilgimesh’s? Maybe a keepsake from his infant son that he took with him?
Way-y-y too many theories and supposition going through our heads.
I agree that he looks human, but Gilgamesh’s father? Why would a military host/horde leave the king to die? I think we need more information before we jump to conclusions, guys…
Wow what a change to the usual style. I love it, it was such a great surprise. I’m certainly excited and curious to see where this goes! I’m not going to settle on anything specific, but this creature certainly seems similar to Gilgamesh as far as I can tell, but I guess I’ll have to wait and see!
Right now I like to think it’s a distant relative of both charles and gilgamesh, the little son back home is gilgameshs’ great great grandfather or something but the guy in the comic is saved by something in the wood and becomes animalistic and becomes a charles relative somehow but we’ll have to see
that is an awesome and ominous begining to the new chapter. I can’t wait to see what twists and turns are ahead of Charles and the rest of the forest animals.
Ooo, this gave me chills! Great opening to Chapter 3. My bet is on Papa Gilgamesh as well. Beautiful art. I love the slight deviation away from your usual style to something that is familiarly evocative of old storytelling, though I couldn’t tell you from where…I just know it is.
don’t know where to post this, so here I go :
any chance to get a reprint for thefirst hardcover ?
Anyway, great webcomic, it deserves to be read and owned on paper…
No one has yet suggested another thought I had. Of course we’ll have to wait and see, but another possibility is that this is Gilgamesh himself, older (in the future/present), and the regular story we’re reading is his fever-dream memory of his past.
What a wonderful piece this is! I love the style and composition of each panel. The transition between the eye in this last panel and the eye in the first of the next installment is great! Thank you for creating your art and sharing it with us!

Hallo!
Thank you for the very good story you tell!
Is it possible we now learn something on Charles’ past?
Saluti!

SO excited. interesting start…
February 22nd, 2012 at 6:14 pm
What the…?
February 22nd, 2012 at 6:16 pm
Yes! I’m crazy excited for the start of Chapter Three! And this is a dynamite-looking page with which to get it started.
February 22nd, 2012 at 6:19 pm
…papa Gilgamesh, I presume?
February 22nd, 2012 at 6:35 pm

I’m confused at the art style, I thought it was a guest comic at first. Is this cave paintingy style because it’s in Charles’ head?
February 22nd, 2012 at 7:22 pm
Ooh, should have read other comments, it probably is Gilgamesh Sr. Still confused about the art style though.
February 22nd, 2012 at 7:26 pm
Oooo! Can’t wait for more!
February 22nd, 2012 at 7:34 pm
Wow, ominous, beautiful
February 22nd, 2012 at 7:50 pm
I sent this to my son. I couldn’t think of any comment that would work. Some day he might understand…
February 22nd, 2012 at 8:11 pm
Hey, you guys…
Look at the mountain on Sep 14 and Nov 16. The style is so different, but can this be the same mountain?
February 22nd, 2012 at 9:09 pm
A very ominous and tenderly beautiful page. Combining weight, gravity, lightness and perspective on the page and the words. Beautiful.
February 22nd, 2012 at 9:30 pm
I actually thought this was papa Owl at first, but the human legs threw me off. Papa Gilgamesh makes a lot more sense =)
February 22nd, 2012 at 10:02 pm
Ooooh, I can’t wait! (Carol hunkers down by the fire to hear the story.)
February 22nd, 2012 at 10:38 pm
@Will M
quite plausible, good eye man, never would’ve spotted that.
Also, I am intrigued by Gilgamesh’s dad’s story already, can wait for more.
February 22nd, 2012 at 11:55 pm
What the….
Ok, who the heck is that, who is the son that he’s referring to and good grief, how can this thing suck me in even more?
February 23rd, 2012 at 12:20 am
Origin story? Yes! Also, interesting style change. Really excited for this.
February 23rd, 2012 at 12:34 am
F@&)ing brilliant you are! I’m blown away.
February 23rd, 2012 at 12:35 am
Love the look. Kind of startling at first.
I think it is pops Christopher.

Papa Enkidu.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:34 am
Gorgeous art. Painful emotions. Excellent.
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:15 am
I LOVE this way this looks. Great choice.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:10 am
I’ll go out on a limb here- I thought it’s Charles’ father. In any case, beautiful stuff! So happy to see it in my rss reader again <3
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:28 am
whoa
February 23rd, 2012 at 10:06 am
oooh pretty
I think it IS Charles, in a past life, yeah.
February 23rd, 2012 at 10:29 am
Alright!!
February 23rd, 2012 at 10:34 am
Ok, who the heck is the freakin’ HOST? I didn’t catch that at first but was this the Raven? The Lion? Someone new?
February 23rd, 2012 at 10:35 am
Oh wait, HOST is plural. So this was a crusade or military campaign that ditched this guy?
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:52 am

Atribilious, what I noticed was the beard. It looks like the curly-cue beard you’d see on the statue of a Summarian/Babylonian King.
Which again, intrigues me even more.
February 24th, 2012 at 2:33 am
Atribilious makes sense… I think I’m inclined to believe it now, especially after I noticed the trail of soldiers in the first panel.
February 24th, 2012 at 7:13 am
I wasn’t prepared for THAT!

February 24th, 2012 at 4:11 pm
when can I turn this money into a chapter 2 book?
February 24th, 2012 at 4:12 pm
Ah yes, the show begins. Interesting beginning to this next chapter. Already spell bound. Can’t speak in full sentences…..
February 24th, 2012 at 4:32 pm
It just got real.

well, the fact the host has left him behind and he was able to save some food and water indicates he is more a prisioner or a slave than a king.
Maybe he is a “Leader from the Wood” who sold his soul to the humans?
February 25th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
Great start to chapter 3, Karl.
February 25th, 2012 at 8:26 pm

Amazing start to chapter 3!
Keep up the good work Karl!

No, this is totally Charles’ father. Or perhaps they have the same father?
