Comic Notes

Hi, everyone! I’m back from San Diego and hustling to fulfill book orders again. Thankfully, my travels are over until September, at least.

Comic-Con was fun, but it would have been nice to have a table there, if only to meet those of you who attended. I ran into some readers on the show floor, purely by happenstance, but I hope to have more of a presence there next year. Until then, you’ll definitely be able to find me at the New York show in October!

Rend(er)ings

More lovely renderings of our hero on the Fan Art page, including this statuesque piece from Andy Checkmark and a slightly more… violent offering from my erstwhile studiomate, young Nicolas Plamondon.

The quality of the art you guys are sending me is outstanding; I’m always delighted and moved by them. Thank you!!

New York Wrap-Up

I’m back in Montréal after attending the New York Comic Con this past weekend, and I just wanted to thank everyone who came by the table to see me. Some of you said it was your first convention!
I gave away lots of Abominable stickers, and I tried to do a sketch for every Charles Christopher fan that stopped by. If you received one, send me a scan of it so I can put them up on the blog! I should have taken photos, but it was pretty busy and I am easily overwhelmed. ;)
It was a fantastic time. I got to meet the crew from Applegeeks, Gary Tyrell from Fleen, and I finally got to say hi to Scott Kurtz in person!
Next year, I want to get a bigger booth so I can display more artwork.

New York!

It’s the first show of the new year!

I’ll be driving a rental car down from Montréal to attend the New York Comicon from February 6th – 8th! If you’re in or around the area, please come by and say hello. I’ll be doing sketches, selling T-Shirts and prints and giving away stickers.
And probably wandering around a lot. Hey, it’s New York! Even the frigid winter weather can’t keep me from exploring Manhattan.
I’ll also be sharing table space with Cameron Stewart, compatriot and author of Sin Titulo. And if we’re really lucky, Ramón Pérez and Andy Belanger might loiter around long enough to sketch something. That’s half of txcomics right there!

UPDATE: Here’s a map of where I’ll be!

Ask Karl – Round Two

Time for another round of everyone’s favourite Abominable Q&A (though questions need not be limited to Abominable things). Let’s get started!

Ask Karl!

Hi everybody! Karl, here. I just wanted to take a moment to welcome all the new readers this week and to thank you all for the glowing praise you’ve been sending me via email. I read them all and I follow all the comments and, believe it or not, a lot of the discussion here affects my approach to the pacing of the story and the tone of the strip. That’s what makes the web such a fantastic medium.
But since I was getting all this mail, I thought I’d start a new blog segment here called ‘Ask Karl’, where I’ll answer some of your questions more directly.

On Webcomics

Hi everyone! Just wanted to point you in the direction of another interview I did with Dave Kellett for the newly-relaunched Webcomics.com.
In it, we discuss the creation of The Abominable Charles Christopher, my work process, and some of my thoughts on making comics for the web as opposed to print.

Go Read!

Needle Felt

My friend Chris at Squid Wool specializes in making needle felt creations – little creatures, fruits and vegetables, even an iPhone! They make great magnets, brooches and accessories, and they’re super-cute. Anyway, he did a Charles Christopher magnet for me and now he’s offering them to you!
I’ve set up a link in my store, or you can go directly to his Etsy page to see more photos and more of his collection.

These are all hand-made, one-of-a-kind items. Even the packaging is lovingly rendered in marker. I can’t wait to see what Chris comes up with next.

Pixel Art

I love pixel art. It’s one of those things that I keep meaning to try but never seem to find time for. Luckily I met Danny Zabbal who, in addition to being a talented illustrator and a nice guy, produces pixel art professionally! He’s also got his own webcomic called Journey into the 6th Dimension, which I’m off to read now.

PS – if anyone would like to make a 16-bit Charles Christopher Nintendo DS game I’m all for it. :)

Webcomickers

I wanted to get in on this meme, but my strip doesn’t really lend itself to human cameos, so I did these quick sketches instead. From left to right, Scott Kurtz of PvP, Rene Engstrom of Anders Loves Maria, and Danielle Corsetto of Girls With Slingshots, all of which you should be reading.

Apologies to the respective subjects for butchering their likenesses. ;)

More to come…?

Abominable Shirts!

T-Shirts

The very first Abominable Charles Christopher T-Shirt is here! It features all new art, drawn specifically for this shirt, and comes in two colours.

They’re available for Pre-Order and will ship in time for Christmas! I’m pretty excited.
